A question about SPECS

Post by npcross » Thu Oct 02, 2014 3:23 pm

Just heading down the M62 and M1 today and started wondering about those little yellow vultures adorning the side of the motorway.

I know these are average speed cameras and will calculate the averages between the first and last set of cameras.

My question is, can they also issue a speeding fine if you exceed the limits in between any pair of cameras throughout the whole length of the motorway they cover ?

In case I havent explained that too well. If I average 50mph along the whole 10 mile stretch (ie. not speeding), but between two sets of camera I average 80mph, then will I get a ticket ?

I hasten to say that I haven't been doing this but just curious as I can't seem to find the answer :-)

Thanks for your help

Nick

The reality is noone knows for sure.

But I think the concept of average from first to last camera is flawed unless there are only 2 cameras.

Where there are multiple cameras then it is average between each camera.

I always assumed it was between any 2 cameras as that would be the way I would do it if I designed the system. That way you can't join the motorwat halfway through the section and just speed the rest of the way. This is just an assumption though.

They ain't worth fcuking with, just set your cruise/speedo to 55.
I used to play truck leapfrog, passing each SPECS camera while hidden next to a truck then I'd boot it up to the next truck ahead and repeat but it got tedious.

It is any two cameras in the connected network. So if you pass A B for whatever reason misses you (say behind a lorry) then picked up on C it will still calculate the average over the distance.

Yep. You need a lot of trucks. Easier to just stick it on 55.

Thanks Guys, I agree with the lotta yer. I do set my cruise... but I was just curious as I couldn't find the answer on the web.

As usual though - never long to wait for the RS246 team to come up trumps :-)

Correct as others have said, you can get done between any pair of cameras in any combination. It's good to see now that the first and last cameras are usually rear facing so bikes aren't immune anymore which always annoyed me as it seemed much more like revenue generation before (not that it still isn't about that!).

Nothing wrong with bikes getting to rag it through! Finally somebody gets to get one over the powers that be :)

I used to enjoy leap frogging them as bam said. If you can avoid the first camera you can keep doing it, just have to slow down when you finally get spotted by one. Good fun :D

I met a guy that works for the company that makes them a few years back and he said they use several cameras in a stretch to remove any variability in traffic conditions, so would also work (for example) set 2-3 in a 4 camera stretch in the same way as they would 1-4 or 3-4 etc
However, he wouldn't confirm if they still work if you change two lanes between sets, but did allude to the fact that they can also record your speed at the point of any camera, but don't apply penalties on this basis as their selling point is that they slow people down gradually rather than causing people to jam their brakes on suddenly like you would with a normal camera
