Yeah read through that before.
It's very good - a lot of effort though!

I'm sorry, I'm not a lover of that.

What's the point of installing an iPod in the dash? I'm all up for upgrading a standard head unit to a decent aftermarket one, but not at the expense of carving the car apart. What happens to the line of switches at the top?
I used to own a 6, now I'm just a lurker!

Switches moved to handbrake area.
B6 and b7 console largely the same.
Even moved the cup holder into the armrest.

Yes it's in my B5 RS4 and here's a few pics to show the relocated buttons etc. Everything is linked either hard wired, via bluetooth or wifi.

The reason I went for the iPad is that it is much better than any head unit. I have a local area network in the car which is provided by one of the iPhones which each have their own dock under the arm rest. Each dock works the same as you would expect and charges the phones as they are inserted. The iPad is wired in to teh ignition so only charges when the key is turned in the ignition. That way you can leave it in position when you get out and it won't drain your batteries, whereas you would always takes your phone/s with you.
The local area network enables streaming of anything you require, YouTube, iPlayer, TV, Sky etc. The iPad is hardwired to a non mech head unit in the glove box which powers the Bose system.
The iPad also has a Tom Tom app which is great as it has a nice big screen and is much cheaper than buying a Tom Tom and looks better than having a shitty box stuck to your windscreen and having wires trailing everywhere.
It also runs an app called Dash Command which is superb. It basically gives you all the parameters that Vag Com uses and gives the results in graphical form and in real time Check it out in the app store it's superb. It can also log faults and you can clear them too. I will be using my car extensively at Vmax and so my passenger can keep an eye on everything from temps to pressures to air intake. It is linked to the iPad via a wifi dongle in the OBD II connector.
It obviously stores loads more music than an old hard drive system, plus music video etc. And when you're stuck in traffic, slide it out and play Angry Birds!!
The phones are also connected to the head unit via bluetooth connection and work just the same as Parrot in terms of lowering the music when the phone rings etc. It is actually better than a Parrot as I can use Siri to phone, text and email people back as well as read my messages to me as I'm driving.

So it does everything that a head unit can do plus a ridiculous amount more and stupidly it's much cheaper than a top of the range head unit, and you can take it everywhere as it's always charged.

Very impressive! I'd love that in mine.

Well done. Must have taken a while though

Hi mate,

It was seven days work in all with two of us doing it. The carbon work was done by Broony at C6 Carbon Mods.

Everything else we did ourselves.

TBH I did the install and then sent the car off to have the engine built so I haven't really had a proper play with it yet.

Is there a huge delay then?
