Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
Hi, I have only recently joined the forum and I thought that you guys would be the people to answer a question I have regarding my next car purchase. Against my other halfs better judgment ive decided that after having diesel a6's for last few years that I like the idea of having some real power again. With my 40th coming up next year I'm going to treat myself to either an V10 S6 or RS6 avant. I will be looking at cars upto the £35k mark so hoping to get something with under 60k miles on the clock. I have had some big engine stuff a in the past ( petrol Range Rovers & ML 55 AMG etc ) so sort of know what I'm in for with running cost but with the misses arguing against a big petrol car I would like some input regarding the running cost from actual owners please. I'm obviously aware that the s6 is going to be the cheaper car to buy and run but how much difference is there between the two models?
The car will only be used for around 8 miles per day during the week and then the usual weekend days out with the family so relatively low miles. The other half will use the car Monday to Friday and therefore driven like a toyota Pruis and I can have my fun at the weekends. Whilst I am no boy racer I do like be able to use the power when I'm on my own. I know it's a bit expansive question but what sort of milage can I expect from a full tank? Is there anything on with these models I need to be aware of when looking at cars .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Andrew

There's plenty of threads that cover this on here...search is your friend.
If an RS6 is used for daily trundles mileage will be horrendous, you'll be looking at 200-250. S6 should be a little better.
Up to 35k would easily find you a very good S6, in fact a fraction of that money. In RS6s you're probably going to have less choice, there aren't that many cars to chose from.

Re: Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
hi Andrew,
RS 6:
expect low teens, prob 15 max, on your 8miles a day
long runs about 20mpg
full tank ... c.300 miles
The RS 6 is fairly well built, but for £35k you should be able to get an Audi Appproved car, or buy privately with a Audi warranty.
The S6 is a nice car, but quite alot slower ... they tend to lose some of their power so dont really have 430PS as they did when new, so will feel noticably slower than a 580PS RS 6 - sound great with a Milltek exhaust added. Doubt the MPg is much different, maybe 10% better than the RS ?

Re: Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
The S6 is a bargain, but one day you will be in it, an RS 6 will go past and you will probably think 'Hmm, should I have gone for the RS'? I guarantee you wouldn’t think that if it were the other way around; you had bought the RS and seen an S6.
I know of a mapped C6 S6, with uprated filters and exhaust that only made 360 BHP on the dyno, (I can find the video and graphs if you like) an RS 6 with the same mods would do 700+. Go for the RS, an approved one is in budget, or you'll always think 'what if’, either way, you will end up with a good car though. Let us know what you decide.

Re: Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
Hi Andrew.
I use mine for my everyday work commute, approx 15 miles (depends which way I go
) Im on the road at 5.30 every morning, so dont hit much traffic, on the way in, but I do on the way home. My route is mixed lanes, A road and dual c/way, my work commute ave is 17mpg. With an 8 mile commute as DK said 15mpg max. I have now had the car for 12 months, and it has been bullet proof. Just completed its 60,000 mile service, not paid for, as was negotiated as part of the deal when purchased. I would go for the RS if you can afford it (Amar's comment is so true), if mpg is an issue, and you are going to be watching the fuel guage all the time, then stick with a diesel.

I think we know one another Andy..!
I used to own a 6, now I'm just a lurker!
Re: Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
I would agree with what's been said already from the perspective of an S6 owner.
I had circa £20k to spend and for that the S6 has been great, ok I only get 19mpg but in the last 14 months it has only cost me 2 tyres and some discs and pads (£260 + fitting) with a service due shortly.
If you have RS6 money too spend and can afford the running costs (parts appear to be around 3 times that of theS6) then go for it.

Re: Newbie advice on v10 S6 or RS6 please
Thanks all, so is it fair to say that theres not a massive difference in mpg between the two but there is a huge difference in performance? I have driven an s6 and thought it was quick but not quick enough for what I'm after. That's why I've started to think about an RS. I've had 2 Audi tiptronic boxes fail in previous A6's, is this an issue with the V10's?
Hi Swanny, your right we do know each other, I've sent you a pm.

No issues with the slosh box.
Performance is very different. If you can get the right car for the money then RS6 is a no brainer. Make sure it's with Audi warranty though. If it does go wrong it's going to be expensive. But as has been said elsewhere reliability has been very good.
It's 100-110 to fill, if that's a consideration. Honestly, it's not a car I'd be giving the wife to trundle around in during the week.

Deffo the RS6. I had a Cayenne Turbo S with much the same mpg and it really annoyed me filling up every time. I remapped it to around 600bhp but being around 2.5 ton it was ok fast. My RS is mental fast and I really don't mind putting fuel in this thing, it's performance deserves it.
It's my only car ( can't be bothered with 2 and keeping one for good) and used by the wife all the time for shopping etc and being the avant can carry rubbish to the skip site as well. Magic car.

S6 V10
Nicer to drive in town with NA throttle response, very reliable, but suffer FSI carbon build up so not too quick. Very firm ride.
RS6 V10
Very quick, more tunable, thirstier, and more expensive to run. Nicer ride but heavier.

As it has been said many times in the c6 rs6 forum. Smiles per gallon not miles per gallon. If you disagree your looking at the wrong car mate:)

And as amar said, if you get an S6 you'd see an RS6 and wish you'd went down that road.
