newbie saying hello..

Post by m6rk-allroad » Sat Aug 04, 2012 8:59 pm

Hello All,

Picked myself up a nice 4.2 B6 S4 which needs a 'little' engine work. I couldn't see a projects thread, so I thought i'd post it here.. let me know if it's in the wrong place.. oh and if anyone has a nice 4.2 BBK engine available please let me know!!

I have been presented for an opportunity to learn and get a nice car in the process..so I figured some of you might find this interesting.

Heres the story. Friend who works for a vw independent garage had a customer come in with a 'small rattle' from the back of the engine and some smoke. Apparently it sounded like a bag of spanners.. The heads were pulled off and the damage thus:

This on it's own apparently isn't too much of an issue as the head can be fixed (from my little knowledge it looked foobar'd to me) However both heads had damage with 12 bent valves in total.

What made it uneconomical to repair was the fact that there was bore damage. Alas he drove it around like this for a while and now you can see the little end bearing on one of the cylinders.

The reason for the valve damage was a broken cam chain tensioner and guide (if you look at the pic you can see the slack chain in the bottom LHS)

(makes an IL4 engine seem quite simple!)

The barrels are a single piece so the engine would need to be stripped down and because they have a special coating (not nikasil, but something else -i forget) means that the amount of engineering work to get the engine sorted just isn't worth it ie it'll need

valves
piston
maybe a conrod
full gasket set
both heads reconditioned etc..
full camchains + tensioners

So poor previous S4 owner was given the option to sell the car for some magic beans / jaffa cakes and walk away from the car given the labour thats already been paid.. I received a call from my mate and was given the option to buy said car, source a replacement engine and work weekends with them to swap it out..

Having the chance to work on a car with some experts pointing me in the right direction is an opporunity I wouldn't pass up. Our rough calculations mean i'll end up with a car that owes me about 3k less than it's worth so even if I don't wanna keep it, I should be quids in (famous last words)

So today I got to do what I like best... take stuff apart!!   They already had the heads off and had started to take the front of the car off, but got to attack the rest of it.. SOOOO many bits!! Just glad I had a couple of experts around to take the piss point me in the right direction... absolutely knackered now!

here's some more pics... interior is mint!

So next stage is to source an engine, going to put new camchain and tensioners on it whilst the engine is out, then put it back together again.. simples

I forgot to take more pictures along the way, but going to set up the gopro and do a time lapse for the engine back in job... now to find an engine  :|

Nice work. Don't forget to gutt the pre cats before you stuck it all back together. Have you thought about doing any other mods too it while it is in bits?

You should ask Mr T to put this in the B6 S4 forum for you mate

Oh, GOOD LUCK!!!

I found a thread about gutting the precats, but was a little worried about having to do something to the o2 sensors.. anyone got any more info?

The new engine will be getting new oil seals, and a complete set of camchains and tensioners seeeing as that is an engine out job.. other than that i'm trying to find a second hand cat-back system if anyone knows of one for sale :)

oh and maybe some rs4 rep wheels.. but depends on how bad the engine budget gets blown :(
