Which car to buy??

Post by algreene » Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:25 pm

Hi guys. Took me a while to find this site!!

Been looking at getting another Audi as i need a bit more of a refined drive than the Evo I was eyeing up (I know!!) lol

Anyway, looking at maybe 22k for a car and am thinking either S4 or RS6..

I know they are totally different performance wise. But what are they like for repair costs? My old Audi A3 was a ball ache to fix at dealerships (Lancaster Audi Liverpool) cost wise..

Petrol costs and tax im not worried about.. But was just wondering what you guys would go for?

Any comments welcome!

BTW.. great site. some great info available too.. 8)

£22k is ideal territory for the original B5 RS4, however you don't mention whether you want a new'ish car or not, as all RS4 are getting on for at least 6 years old now

B5 2.7t RS4 - gone
Ed 30 Golf DSG - gone
A5 3.0tdi - gone within 12 months!
S3 2.0 tfsi - 6+ years, but now sold

Hi mate. Thanks for the reply..

I would like as new as poss really. Iv found 53/04/54 plate S4's and RS6's about with decent low miles (30-40K)

Also I think iv set my heart on the 4.2 engine after hearing one a few weeks back!!

Firstly, welcome to the site.

Opening a can of worms here...you'll have quite a few opinions ranging from a B5 S4 and loads of money left over for mods, through the B5 RS4 with some cash left over, through the B6 S4 (dunno about prices on these I'm afraid) and the RS6 - although I think you may struggle to find one for that money.

Now as for the noise, you can make a B5 S4 or RS4 sound really awesome (if that's what you want). I knoW CliveD has a pretty well sorted B5 RS4 and I liken the exhaust note to a straight through exhaust hooked up to a Merlin engine. Ok so not the same sort of rumble you get from a V8.

You don't mention where you are ... you might find some forum users near to you who can help in person?

Good luck with your search!

£22k should get you a 54 S4 with about 40k on it. I'm with Derdle, I don't see you getting a late lowish mileage RS6 for that. Not immaculate anyway.

S4 (also fantastic - I wouldn't say no) would ultimately depreciate more than a B5 RS4 over the next couple of years IMHO and £22k should get you a decent one. But then I'm perhaps a touch bias towards the B5. :smile_smoking:

B5 RS4 no question is your choice. With some good trimmings and low milage 22k will get you a fine example, no problem. A good remap and milltek will give you the drive of your life (it did me). Your get a sweet sound from a custom exaust and save some cash on the strong residuals as its as rare as a Labour tax cut. Save like buggery, sell the wife and kids and buy a B7 in a years time and behave/smile like demented juvinile all the time, like me :) Good luck, a nice selection in the classifieds !
