hi,

i just acquired my D4 S8... this section of the forum is somewhat quiet.

Is it that they are super reliable (I doubt :) ) or not many folks are into them?

I also have a S8 D4 (2015) that I bought 2018 with 75K miles on it for $39K. I now have 175K miles on it and remain in love with it. I had previously had a '91 V8Q and an '03 S8 (D2), both of which I bought used with about 100K miles on them and then sold them with over 200K. The D2 was probably the most reliable except for the 5-speed DF tranny that needed rebuilding (as they all did!) at 150K. I was fortunate to buy my D4 right after it had the typical turbo oil problem, so got it with new turbos and the upgraded oil strainer. The only engine issue I have had was the oil separator cracking at 125K (Audi extended the warrantee on this item to 120K!). This resulted in the classic whistle at idle. I found one on Amazon for about $300 and replaced it myself over a weekend (whew...). I did have one exhaust flex joint go bad but found a local welder that welded in an aftermarket one for a couple hundred dollars. Did also replace all 4 O2 detectors at about 160K to cure an intermintent CEL. Other issues in the 100K miles I've put on: replaced 2 faulty front suspension height sensors, currently have a sports differential warning I have not resolved, and have developed the suspension rattle over rough roads that seems to be endemic (likely loose antiroll bushings I've heard). Again, overall, I am overwhelmed with the performance, reliability, and comfort of this car. And the fuel mileage is incredible! On actual tank-to-tank measurements when driving on midwest freeways at an average of 78mph I have calculated 29.1mpg (the display actually showed 31mpg)!

Mine has the cold weather, night vision assistant, B&O sound, and full driver assist packages. It is Malibu Gray with black leather and carbon fiber interior trim. You are correct is thinking that they are not too popular...hence the incredible used car bargains. I believe there were only about 750 sold in 2015 in America; there were only 300 D2's sold in 2003; and there were only 590 V8Q's sold in 1991. I had always intended to buy an S4 or S5, but could not pass up the value of these S8's!
