Hi guys,

Bought a rs6 c7 2013 a week ago with 80k on the clock.

I noticed a knocking from the front left wheel, I thought it was going to be a cv joint.. after putting it up on a ramp, everything seems to be tight. The only place where there is movement is on the inside of the driveshaft going into the gearbox.

Anyone had similar problems? Is it a case of new gearbox or is there a fix??

It is not so common but a known problem. From what i read, it is the rubber bushing on the OEM carrier that started to break down (most likely due to the elements and heat since the carrier is just above the exhaust altough there is a heat shield between). Afaik the carrier itself isn't sold seperatly (please double check with dealer) and is part of the driveshaft itself (even tough it is silly insane thin metal plate carrier with rubber).
There is however 1 aftermarket carrier for this and designed specificly for this issue. It is thicker alu 2 piece carrier with polyuthereen bushing sold by SRM (silly rabbit motorsport). Keep in my it is not officially know, but won't fit with wider Milltek or any other aftermarket exhaust with pipes wider then stock. Price is sadely pretty high (cnc milled piece), but there is some room for pricing .
How ever, importtaxes etc still making it an expensive item.
*that is why i'm in the progress of making my own identicaly shaped carrier....

Thanks for that mate, but it’s the shaft that runs through the gearbox to the front left wheel where the play is.

It seems like the gearbox has worn where the shaft goes in??

If you only bought it a week ago, can you not go back to the dealer as it will have come with some warranty?

I bought it private, and the previous owner claims he knows nothing about it. So unfortunately I’m going to have to go down the fix it route.

Will keep you posted how I get on...

That is a real shame and unlucky.

If it was mine, I would search out a local Audi\VW specialist (not a popular RS Tuning specialist) but just a boggo VAG specialist and see what they say, to try and keep the cost down, as it must be fairly 'standard' parts albeit on a V8 lump (maybe the place where you put it on the ramp)??. Where abouts in the country are you? If you are Northern \ Yorkshire based then I know a good garage I can recommend....

I’m in Manchester, a friend of mine is a Macanic, between him and a local gearbox company have come up with a idea of taking the driveshaft out & wrapping the metal around the driveshaft to stop the vibration/movement.

Other than that the only other option is to take the gearbox out & repair/replace the gearbox housing.

Maybe that is a good thing and means it isn't a common issue (sad news for you offcourse).
Respect for this forum but it isn't the best when it comes to issues or help, maybe you want to have a look at audizine.com (but i have to be honest i haven't seen your issue come by there aswell).
