Wrapping Mirrors

Post by JimbobSquarePants » Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:30 am

I’ve got a black car with everything black and some carbon details... but I’ve got the Matt aluminium mirrors... they just don’t look right to me!

Mine have got the 360 camera lenses on them... not sure if that makes a difference.

I know I can get some genuine carbon replacements but wanted to avoid the cost unless it’s necessary.

As an alternative has anyone had their wing mirrors wrapped? How well did they come out? What wrap did the company use? Do the mirrors need to come off to do them? And what did it cost?

Thx all

Carbon is not my thing however, my son got his mirror caps and other bits and pieces wet dipped by Wicked coatings. They have an array of carbon weave patterns and colours and claim to be able to match OEM shades/patterns.
https://www.wickedcoatings.co.uk/carbon-fibre-dipping
Very quick turn around and still look as good as the day they were done (approx 2 years ago)- a really high gloss finish.

We bought new mirror caps etc and sent them off to be dipped- but the service turned out to be quick enough for us to have just sent the original bits.

I'd avoid carbon dips personally as I don't think they look like real carbon, it just doesn't have the depth.
You can buy carbon skinned mirror caps for cheap enough or buy some genuine ones.
I'd also avoid wrapping as the actual covers come off easy enough and are cheap enough to buy a spare set and spray gloss black or body colour etc as they are exactly the same as the rest of the A6 range (no RS tax).

The 360 camera doesn't make a difference as the camera is on the lower half of the mirror and not the cap. However you need to make sure you buy the right type depending on whether you ha e labe assist or not as the lane assist light is a cut out in the mirror housing. Other than that you can buy any A6 mirror cover (pre or post facelift) as long as it has side assist or not (depending on your current spec)

Thx loads, had a few cycling bits from Ali express so think I’ll take the plunge. Watched a video online on removing the covers and looks straightforward enough.... fingers crossed :-)

Felt for a change and despite the fact that Im not a big fan of wrapping i went to the step to wrap some of the details of my PE. Used gloss black on rails and windows. Front /rear splitter and mirrors in carbon look.
Very pleased with the result.

Looks great. Did they take the roof rails off to wrap them or do them in situ?

There is no need to take the roof rails off to wrap. Manufacturers of wraps still haven’t mastered the carbon wrap. It still always looks like a wrap

I think PaintKillers recently wrapped a BMW spoiler then lacquered it and it looked pretty good, much better than any previous wrap I've seen.

I’d like to see that in the flesh. I had my C6 mirror caps wrapped in gloss carbon. They looked ok but clearly not carbon

Re: Wrapping Mirrors Fail

Post by JimbobSquarePants » Sat Mar 24, 2018 4:41 pm

The mirrors arrived quickly and well packaged - that’s the good but... I fitted the mirrors which pretty straightforward but hen removed them straight away! Maybe I was unlucky but the fit around the indicators was terrible... see phots vs original.

I spend a while seeing if there was anything I could do to align them better, but they only go in one position which left them looking terrible.

To a passing eye or from a distance they look fantastic it’s only when you look up close, and I couldn’t face seeing the terrible alignment every time I’m driving...

Time to talk to a local wrapper!

And in the plus side I learnt how easy it was to take the mirrors off!

Here’s a guide if you need it:
