Right, the wife has finally convinced me after years of nagging that we're getting a dog. This, and a desire to reduce my outgoings for a while, see my BMW F10 M5 and Porsche 991 GT3 going up for sale and me trawling every article, video review and RS6 for sale across the interweb!

At first, I thought I'd buy an early 2013/14 car with a few miles, Litchfield Stage 3 it and I'd be happy. Now I'm looking at being mildly sensible with a 2016 Performance model and an honourable Audi warranty. £70k max really.

And then comes the question of spec! Carbon brakes and the 189 mph top end appeal but it's clear not many have this and if they do it's understandable pricey. Other things that are a must but not sure 100% if they're standard on the PE are:

* Pan Roof
* Reversing camera
* Black pack
* Heated seats

Colour wise, Sepang, Misano, Nardo or one of the special colour are current favourites. I do love Porsche Riviera Blue too and may even have Sepang wrapped that colour.

So, what would you say is a must on the specification?

None of that is standard on the PE. Heated front seats are standard across all RS6 but the rears were a £200 ish option. Roof and cameras were an option. The PE came with titan as the styling pack but black was a no cost option as long the car wasn't also black (later cars circa late 2016 I think, could be ordered black with black optics).
And don't bother with Litchfield. I know people that thought they were brilliant until going to MRC, one even found out Litchfield fitted their downpipes the wrong way round. A standard PE is about the same as a Litchfield mapped car anyway. If you do decide to map it later take it to someone like MRC or APR.

Must have options for me were Assistance package for the adaptive cruise. Parking pack advanced was great for the 360 cameras. Most important one for me was the one thing that can't be retrofitted, DRC.

Most important extra is a Hatchbag rear boot liner. Brilliant for keeping the car dog proof

if i was to order a new car i would defo be selecting the following options again adaptive cruise and side assist you can buy these as part of a pack. B&O, digital TV and ceramic brakes which may car doesn't have. My car is on air and i think it's an excellent compromise as a lot of my driving is done on the motorway and in town. I've never really used the connect features on my car as i just connect the phone to the car by bluetooth.

On the tuning stakes whether Litchfield, MRC or APR my fear is of the engine going pop and not having any warranty cover (I'm not one for trying to defraud Audi as in that other thread). It's always what put me off mapping the M5 as there's been too many stories of catastrophic failures, even on standard cars. Is the engine failure a real fear if tuned?

There is no issue which has been highlighted as being a weakness of the 4ltr engine. Ultimately however, how much power does one really need in a daily driver in its standard guise and in PE form 600BHP and four drive make the car a real weapon.

And actually I forgot about Connect, it's a great feature as Google maps and Google search are very useful as is the WiFi for the kids ipads.
I agree, the PE doesn't need mapping in my opinion. FYI my car dynod at 888NM when overboosting, 774NM when on normal boost. Plenty there as standard.
The engine is just as likely to go pop as standard as it is tuned, I don't think tuning makes it any weaker, it's plenty strong in that respect, but like any car, there will be a handful of engine failures. The only difference with a tuned car is that if it does go pop you will be looking at paying for it yourself. FYI you can buy a secondhand engine for about 4k so even with fitting it is nowhere near the quoted 40k for a new engine supplied and fitted by Audi.

Yes! And a strip of paint protection film across the top of the rear bumper.

I can testify that they are a great dog car!!! I traded up from an RS4 as we were going to get a second dog, and the 4 wasnt large enough! Well, it was a good excuse!

On the subject of dogs what are you guys using to keep said canine restrained in the boot?

I'm using a Croft standard crate/cage which is ok but not great as it's rather bulky. Something more shaped would be better.

Make is right, as the TV option comes with 2 TV screens hung on the comfort seats, as well as using the MMI screen in the front. So, unless you really want/have use for the rear screens, you could do as I have done and have aerials and a TV tuner fitted so you can have a multitude of TV stations on just the MMI screen to view when stationary or listen to your favourite channels when on the move. Interestingly, the wiring/connections behind the dash/cockpit, in Performance models at any rate, is identical to that of virtual cockpits, although it isn't one, if you get my drift (electrician/fitter will need to know this to order in the correct TV tuner).

Video in motion is a £50 job if you want the TV to work for passengers whilst driving.
