Roof bar recommendations

Post by NLM13 » Thu Nov 02, 2017 4:15 pm

Hi there,

Have any of you fitted a roof box or bike carrier to your cars, and if so what roof bars did you use?

I have an old set of Thule aero bars, but they are a bit battered now, and as I will probably need to fit a box for my upcoming ski trip I thought I would get some new ones.

Any suggestions welcome, thanks

I am using my Thule Excellence from the previous car (photo below)...and using Thule SlideBar 891 which are awesome...
Makes people go  when they see the box on the side of the car, and plus no climbing ever or getting yourself dirty... :)

I have the Atera bars, just used them with 4 bikes on and worked faultlessly, there is locating holes on the car but I believe its only the Audi bars that use these.

I'd check what Audi suggest, as with the A8 it was only Audi that supplied the correct fitting kit.

Does the RS6 have roof rails? I've used the Thule Aero Bars for bike careers & a roof box & TBH would take those over alternatives given how practical & versatile they are.

Thanks for the replies,

I quite like to look of the slide bars, would save getting filthy accessing the box after the 1500 mile drive! I just need to see if my ancient roof box is compatible with the newer t track fitting method, or if I need a new one of those too!

On my now sold B8 I used Thule Wingbar Edge bars, with a Packline FX210 box - lightweight and low-profile, the load bars went through tunnels inside the box. This meant the box sat very close to the car roof for VASTLY improved aerodynamics and significant noise reduction compared to other roofboxes. 210 cm long, and holds 410 litres. We used it to carry our buggy base around, along with several other big bags of baby gear/paraphernalia. It can also accommodate 'carry-on' sized cases etc.

I have found the Thule Aero bars very good. I can have a large top box together with two bike racks on the roof. I used them on my B7 and with the correct feet they fit very neatly on the RS6.

I use mine only for ski trips also, so I know what you mean...nothing gets a car as dirty as going skiing I swear (I am not including mudding,no!)... :)

Excellence has 75kg weight hold which is pretty astonishing for a box; when the box is full it does take some muscle to move the bars and box to the side though, it's not feather lite...
But we were able to fit 5 people, suitcases plus skis and ski boots for all of us in the car and the box...
56Nord box might be prettier, but I would always sacrifice looks for capacity...not that Excellence box is ugly by any means...just saying though...
