Need a New Windscreen

Post by Iain » Thu Sep 07, 2017 12:57 pm

Quick one.

Need a new screen - how do I ensure I can get an genuine Audi screen from Autoglass, rather than their own manufactured screen?

Cheers :bigwave:

I had this problem 3 years ago.

The option was to pay Autoglass, can't remember the cost but I borked at it (£800 rings a bell). I just took the one they had after calling my insurance. This may have been because of the insurance company i was with, call yours first I would suggest.

Say it will void manufacturers warranty if you use non genuine parts. They will then (reluctantly) order a dealer part in.
However for any car less than 3 years old they use OEM anyway, you may want to check.

Whether it bears any relevance to you,i not saying. However i have the same dilemma with my B7.
I have purchased a OEM windscreen from TPS and have arranged my own indeopendant fitter. Bit more costly than going through my insurer.
But thats my choice.
Hope you get it sorted.

I tried that, also said it was a special car wanted to keep it original etc etc, insurance company was unmoved. You may be right/in a better position with a newer car.

Can I ask why? Whats the difference between an aftermarket windscreen obviously approved by Auto Glass and an Audi one?? Why would you pay the massive difference? It's not exactly a mechanical part which could fail??

As per Golf. Had 2 need replacing on my M5 & i pushed the insurers stating the windscreen is a key component & has cameras, HUD & sensors etc. reliant on it.

BWM also confirmed that the warranty on the car would be voided on all things attached or reliant on the windscreen if a non OEM screen was used.

If you can get an OEM one at same cost, why not? I tried hard, but the insurance company wouldn't have it. Only offering for me to pay the difference (£800 or so does ring a bell)

So, my choice was pay the £50 excess or £800 for OEM

I wouldn't, but my car was 6 years old or so when it happened.

TBH I've had no problems/issues with the one that was fitted.

At 6 years old the OEM original was quite pitted (which I hate being an ex army helicopter pilot)

Had no problems with the new one

Good luck with getting OEM, OP

When I replaced the screen on my B7 they tried to fit an non oem one but tried to convince me that this was the company that Audi now use from factory etc but I said I wanted an oem one and I'm anal about the glass manufacturer logo not matching on one window. They called my insurance company who approved the use of oem but had to wait a few extra days for them to order on in.

Well,

I can give you my exact experience a couple of years ago with Autoglass/Insurers

My car is lowered alot and possibly harder than most on here with all the billet mounts/poly bushes etc on everything and I had not considered this might have an effect on the windscreen - so when I rang up I was given the same offer - Autoglass one for £50 or Audi OE for hundreds extra. Like most here have said i argued my case to no avail, and accepted the Autoglass reluctantly.

Two days later there was a "bang" loud enough to be heard, like a decent size rock had hit underneath the car - nothing had hit the windscreen - and a crack appeared low down in the middle section of the screen just above the windscreen wiper. This rapidly extended to a foot long and bent down to the bottom of the screen and when I got to my destination and inspected it you could see "feathering" on the edge of the glass laminate that was proud.

I phoned Autoglass and despite protests that something must have hit the screen I took it to see them - one of their top tech happened to be visiting the branch when I arrived - after much "<beep> me, never seen that before" from all who saw it, they all agreed that my car must be exerting enough force through the screen to literally shatter the screen in situ and they agreed to swap in a genuine Audi screen at their cost.

That was 3 years ago and the screen is still perfect, so it kinda proves the difference in strength and quality of the original item versus Autoglasses presumably thinner/less tempered screen.

I certainly wont be having a non-OEM one in the next time I get a crack.

Does the oem screen come with location markings for the cameras and sensors?

Oem, non-oem will all have the camera bracket prefitted to the screens. Still need recalibrating though
