Oil refill

Post by Tadass910 » Mon Aug 14, 2017 8:44 pm

Hello forumers,

Which oil best to use Castrol Edge 5w30 or 5w50? As I red if you go faster than 150 km/h better to use 5w50 is it right?

Another question do you need sometimes refill oil if level is too low? My mmi now shows that I need change oil after 4000km or 189 days, oil level now ok, I only wonder if I drive too hard my engine can burn oil quicker than 189 days, so shall I have extra 1 liter oil in my trunk in case I need add it?

I always keep 1ltr of 5w 30 in the boot. I've never needed it on the C7 but my C6 would often need a top up.

Likewise, I keep oil in the boot. My oil level gauge is slightly above yours with 4,000 miles to go to the next oil change so I topped it up. Don't skimp on oil. Not sure about your question on 30 vs 50 and speed.

So when you need to fill 1 ltr? When oil level gauge goes way down to minimum? Is there going to be an information that I will need to fill 1 liter? I understand yellow icon of oil should appear in a dash or no?

Common sense (at least for me) tells me....the V8 holds 8.3l of oil. The MMI oil bar equals 1l. It wouldn't make sense for me to let the oilbar go down till it is at 7.3l.
Personally i always top off once it starts indicating a shortness. If not mistaken it will drop in 1/4 or 1/8 segments.

So you need to top always oil? Not good to drive when it's showing half?

Not saying it is bad and no mechanic background, but like i tried to point out, the V8 oil gets warm pretty fast (faster in my s6 i assume). Yes, a warm operational temp is kinda a must before 'pushing' your car, so less oil mihgt help getting a warm enough engine but afaik the main reason of oil in engine is to lube all parts. If on 'low' that means there is 1/8 less oil in the pan to circulate, 1/8 less oil to cool down once running etc...
You don't have to be a mechanic to top off oil :). Even if you add half of what you think is a top off, it can only be good for the car (new oil is never bad as long it is of the same type/brand).
The mmi oil reader is sometimes a pain in the butt (sometimes it shows while driving, sometimes i tell to turn off car and wait, sometimes it just doesn't want to show). A good old oil dipstick is handy, but you can also always turn ignition on and pop the hood. Normally that will give you the oil indicator bar in your DIS display :).

The primary reason to add oil to an engine is to significantly reduce heat, therefore eliminating components overheating and seizing together.

Oilman will go into the pro's and cons of 30 vs 50 oils...I believe the lower number is viscosity cold and the 2nd number is the viscosity hot
