Black Exhaust Tips...

Going in for new black exhaust tips Monday...

Expressed my disappointment to the dealer that there appeared to be corrosion amounting to the edge of the exhaust tips, like others here had experienced. It was booked in and surprisingly they just tried to 'rub' it off. However they thought the tips were chrome/silver and therefore scratched the black plating clean off one of them.

They admitted their error and apologised saying they would replace the damaged tip. I thanked them for their honesty but said i expected both replaced as could not accept them looking different to one another.

They reluctantly agreed although I never did get a definitive answer from them as to why the 'corrosion' appeared in the first place...

Hopefully these will last a little longer.

Just wipe around the edges of the exhaust with an old cloth soaked in ACF-50 once a month during the winter and they will last for ever.

Mark, you are using it for a while on your car?

Is this the product you are talking about?

That is the stuff. Great for preventing corrosion anywhere - and heat resistant to some degree (bikers spray on exhausts and engine).

Yep I just spray it everywhere then give it a wipe with the rag. It does smoke in the really hot bits but doesn't leave any marks.

I hate cleaning things! This both stops the corrosion and also does make the dirt fall off quicker when washing.

Mine were replaced last June and are exactly the same again now, so I guess they didn't change anything with the replacement tips.

Apparently Audi say it's not a warranty issue, despite them not even lasting a year before needing replaced again. They have said that if cleaned using "the proper Audi products" the tips remain fine. What <beep>. Will wait to see what local Audi manager can do, but I think they'll just end up being left until I come to sell the car.

Question for those that have had to replace, can the tips be unscrewed and simply remover or do you have to loosen the exhaust rear section to get them out?

Mine were just replaced at the dealership. They had to take the bumper off to get to them. They are not connected to the exhast at all - they are mounted on the inside of the bumper.
