New Boots...What a Difference!

Post by feeltheburn » Mon May 16, 2016 7:20 pm

I am by no means a great driver, but always felt that there was something missing from the driving experience in my RS6. The car never seemed to inspire me with confidence especially on Turn-In. Well either I have suddenly become a driving god worthy of a seat in an F1 Red Bull or the new Michelin Pilot Super Sports are every bit as good as the reviews I have read.

What a difference they have made, the grip is phenomenal, and turn in is now a lot more precise feeling. Pulling out for the over take is no longer such a testing experience; by no means cured but completely manageable. I am glad I binned the Contis-they had around 5mm of tread left but always thought they were the main issue with the handling. I have not driven the factory fit Pirelli or Dunlop tyres but I'd strongly advise folks to switch over to MPSS if you are on Contis.

Tyres are as “comfortable”, possibly slightly louder on Motorways but nothing to be concerned about- they even look better than the Contis (imo).

Just had to swap both front tyres in a bit of a hurry due to a screw in one of them and the wear being to great to just go with one tyre.

Had to stay with the conti sport contacts which came with the car as that's all I could get a short notice. But I ended up with tyres without the foam noise cancelling insert as where on the original conti's. The car feels completely different. Lot more positive on turn in, and while I haven't suffered the erratic movement under power on overtaking as some people have mentioned, the tyres deffinetly seem to be better when crossing the white lines. The tram lining effect I had on the previous tyres is totally gone. Could it be possible that the noise cancelling foam has a big enlighten affect on the tyre to notice it.

Will Defo be trying the MPSS though when I next change all 4 tyres.

What noise cancelling foam? Is it only the Conti's that have this?

I have no issues with my Dunlops, but I can't wait to get the MPSS on, I know they are a far superior tyre.

I believe all three OEM makes (Pirelli / Conti / Dunlops) fitted to the C7 from new all have the noise cancelling foam inside the tyre (which also makes the inclusion of a canister of puncture junk in the boot redundant)

I didn't know about the foam insert until the tyre came off due to the screw in it.

The set I've just had to put on the front are contisport contact without the conti silent, the foam crap. The car feels a lot different with them as explained in my other post. Still wont be anywhere near as good as the MPSS though.

Did you notice any difference in noise with the non foam version?

Re Michelin Super Sports. My wife has just put these on here 997 and they are noticeably noisier than her Pilot Sports - and likely to get worse given how much quieter news tyres are than worn ones.

Thanks for the tip! Will consider when it comes time to change.

I plan to get the geometry done soon given the amount of cars that seem to be out of whack from factory. Do you know how much adjustment there is? I aim to max out the front camber.

Be careful as that will make the car much more road crown sensitive - already an issue on these cars as anyone who has done a full bore overtake on a normal A or B road knows too well.

in my experience Audi's don't normally have any adjusment for front camber, is the RS6 any different? Normally need to fit a set of adjustable top arms to allow any camber adjustment.

To be honest Mike the road noise isn't that much worse. Maybe I bit more hollow sounding if you hit a cats eye or something but overall ok. The double glazing up front does a good job at masking most road noise though, and I'm sure as the tyre wear they'll get loader.

How you finding the handling of you car now it's lowered. I'm liking the look of your ride height. The OP's looks good too. I'm on air so may have a play about. Be totally different beast to yours on springs but gives me the option to raise it when needed. The lane to my mums house is like a stage of rally GB.
