Trip to Germany and Limiter

Just got back from a trip under the channel, through France, Belgium, Netherlands and on to Germany for a family wedding.
Car was superb throughout and I cant think of anything more suited to this trip - easily carried all our luggage, extremely comfortable and just eats the miles.
I managed to find a few sections of autobahn with little traffic on Sunday / Monday so had opportunity to test out the limiter. Easily pulled to 180 mph where the limiter kicked in (I actually saw 181 on the HUD). Car was extremely stable and civilised at speed - my 8 year old was watching a movie in the back and was oblivious to it all. Felt like it had quite a bit more if the limiter was removed.
Has anyone tested the accuracy of the speedo at high speeds? I didn't have any GPS to test but I know that at UK motorway speeds the speedo lines up almost exactly with the measure from my road angel (my M5 used to overstate by about 8-9% vs the GPS). My car has the dynamic pack so is supposedly limited at 174. The M5 was limited to 155 but I saw 274kph (=168 MPH) on a previous run to Germany which I figured was close to 155 actual.
BTW, I couldn't find any way to change to KPH on the digital speedo in the RS6 - I should have read the manual before I set off but guessed I would just figure it out once I arrived in France (I didn't!).

That would probably be around 174mph Actual then. Had my RS4 over at the start of the year and it topped at 168mph on the speedo which would be around 155mph actual.
I assume the MMI on the RS6 is similar to the RS4. If you go into the settings for the nav you can change the set up of your readouts from miles to KM and this changes the digital speedo readout as well...I also made the same mistake and found it while waiting to get off the ferry on the way home

In my C6 I saw 205 speedo, 199 GPS. So accurate to 2.5% or so. I would presume similar accuracy on the C7

Cool
I wouldn't be doing 180 with my kids in the car no matter how stable!...

That's because you have some respect for your kids,I can't believe anyone would do that with children in the car
Let alone admit to it on a public forum

I don't want to defend 180 with kids in the car or oppose those who have criticised it and i haven't driven an rs6 at 180. (I lived in germany for 10 years during the 90's and 130-150 was about my limit in a e class then.)
But why does it make any difference whether 'your' kids are in the car or not ? Unless you can make sure that everybody else doesn't have kids with them as well

This was on a very quiet autobahn, straight road, dry conditions. The risk at 180 in those conditions is far less than doing 80 on a UK motorway passing two lanes of traffic. I guess you would do that with kids in the back?
In my case, yes a blow out could occur and could be disastrous but I removed virtually all other influences. In the UK motorway example, there are probably 15 or 20 cars which could have a blowout (many of which are likely to be much less well maintained) or just behave like an idiot with equally disastrous consequences.
As has been said before, its not speed that kills its usually idiots behaving stupid. This car is incredibly stable at speed and the whole episode didnt feel dangerous or risky (my wife would have stopped me if it had).

It's actually quite an interesting point. Yes i can see it being viewed as a touch irresponsible, however i've been well into treble figures with my kid/s in the car, often with them egging me on or giggling inanely. Can't say i've been close to 180mph, but then i've never had my kids in the car when i've been in Europe so those North of say 150mph speeds have only ever been with me in the car.
High speed driving in Germany where allowable is vastly different to trying the same in the UK, even removing the legal implications.
Oddly enough & i can't really explain this, but i'd never consider doing over say 90 with my youngest in the car. He's 16mths old so must be some reason for this & i know the handbrake would play up merry fcuk if i did so perhaps that's why

I love speed as much as the next guy...and we've probably al some silly things in our cars over the years.
When I've done intergalactic speeds it always been alone or with another Petrol head who's aware and mature enough to know the risks.
Of course you can't mitigate againest something going wrong and hurting or even killing an innocent party....I just feel that my kids can't really do anything to stop me driving at 180mph?...and if something did go wrong how could you live with yourself knowing you'd hurt or killed your kids at 180mph?
Just my ten pence worth.
PS....I respect the RS6 capabilities.

interesting thread guys, won't get into kids in the car discussion,by the way what's the definition of a kid ?? mine are grown and gone and I still call them kids?? and they adore the car,and driving it . anyway a ? had mine 4 weeks and got stopped, unmarked uno what, can't really go into too much detail but dual carriageway and I should have lost my license-gulp-I can only guess they hadn't followed long enough, the point is you just don't know how fast you are going in this car, I am sure you all have to be really careful. the real ? is this ,the officer said he clocked me on the GPS at x mph which means ,he said ,that I was probably doing y on the speedo, this was some 9 mph difference (less )-does anyone know how this works-also I travel abroad a lot could someone just go through how you change to kph on the MMI-the matrix lights change automatically to driving on the right and back again when you come back here, surprised the mph doesn't change as well.

Tell me about it, I got done by a traffic cop a little while back in low ish tripple figures and thankfully I passed the personality test so she used her discresion to give me 3 points.. and just recently got done doing 101 on the way to the eurotunnel. Oops!!
The copper you had clearly doesn't understand how the speedo works lol. The GPS speed is your actual speed, the speedo will usually read a little high. It can be up to 10% but most of us on here find the RS models are pretty accurate, around 2.5% ish. I don't know why he even said it as it isn't important at all what your speedo was shoing, the important bit is how fast you were actually going.

You've been very lucky if you get away with North of a ton twice. Can you suggest some lottery numbers??
I must be getting boring in my old age as save all the higher speeds for the track & Europe. Normally seen cruising at 80-85 up & down the M6/A14. I do have the odd blat on the de-restrcited section on the M6

but having been close to totting up bans for speeding in the past, my license has remained clean for over 12yrs now.
Just watch for the the 'i've been done for speeding thread next week'

Yep. I'd not go hairing around anymore. I've noticed how habits have changed over the past ten years. 90 plus was common place. Now you'd stick out a country mile piling down the outside at that speed. Rozzers won't want to pull you for 85 generally, unless you're driving like a twunt. There's plenty of cameras to collect the extreme speeders.

I do not trust the autobahn any more than a UK road.
Been done twice for 3 digit speeds (118 and 109) both times resulting in a 3 points FPN only and no court visit. When and when you do it are important and coppers take that in mitigation. They're not stupid. I'm not advocating speeding, I'm just saying none of us bought the worlds fastest estate cars to use them solely to haul stuff from b&q. Be careful
