Cooling fan

Post by fabrs4 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 7:40 pm

Hi gents, would like to ask your advice/thoughts on this one, after a short journey 4-5 miles and then turned off the cooling fan then starts and continues to run for about 4 minutes, the temperature gauge shows that it's not yet reached its operating temperature. The result of this is the battery is been discharged and as a rule the stop/start fails to operate as it should. Spoke to Stoke Audi and to honest tried to fob me off saying it was normal . Would appreciate any thoughts thanks

Yep, mine does that as well, longer journey result in the fan staying on for more than that. My stop/start does not work when the engines is cold anyway. Usually a good 10 miles/15 mins or so before its starts working. It's will start working straight away if the engine is still warm on restart.

Nothing to worry about :beerchug:

My fans ran on after turning the car off for quite some time. I've noticed this in all the cars I've had or used with turbos and have assumed it was to cool the turbos down rather than anything else. My current 911 TTS does the same. However I didn't notice this "feature" having any impact on Auto Stop/Start or excessively draining the battery.

Same happens on my caddy van so must be the norm now. :) draws a fair bit off attention though as I lock and walk off from the rs6. My dad thought it was still running!

During summer here, my fan was on as long as 11 min after engine off even after non spirited driving.

My C6 did this and my C7 does this too. Don't forget you have one hell of a lump of engine in a very small area. Plus both engines have a dry sump and so you have another radiator/cooler for the oil. Add to that a couple of large turbos and that's why they run cooling fans - the residual heat (even after a short run) is very high indeed and requires cooling to prevent damage
