Tyre Life on RS6

Post by s4geo » Fri Aug 15, 2014 3:50 pm

I've just changed both fronts as I had a small screw through one of them and although it was a clean entry I didn't want to bother with an attempted repair considering the forces involved and the cost of the car versus the cost of a couple of new tyres - plus the Pirelli NCS's that my car came with have the foam noise cancelling strip running throughout the inside of the tyre which would need to be cut away (although that is pretty doable).

To my surprise there was only 4mm of tread left and the outer edges were looking pretty well warn - so they'd have needed a change soon anyway! The rears look better, with about 5.5-6mm of tread and reasonable outer edges. I'd not really inspected the tread carefully before as the mileage was still quite low, but it was a bit of a shock to see notice that earlier.

I'd be interested to see what sort of tyre wear has everyone else is seeing thus far? For comparison I'm almost 8k miles into my car and I haven't tracked it.

Cheers

Do the tyres reduce the cabin noise?

I've not driven a car with Dunlops, so its difficult to compare like for like, but they are pretty quiet in my opinion - certainly as good if not better than my S4 which was on standard Pirelli Pzero 19's.

I'd expect about the front wear you've experienced in a car as heavy as the RS6. On a car of that size/weight/power i'd reckon on 10-12k miles being normal. If such a huge difference between fronts & rears (same on our Q5) it makes sense to rotate once or twice to get both even wear & save a few ££'s.

Only done 3500 miles in my M5 & the outer tread (very outer) has all but gone on the offside front & the nearside front isn't much better, but plenty of tread across the rest of the tyre so all good for a while. That said, the wear was encountered ay Anglesey Circuit & the MPSS tyres are very soft when hot.

I would think it depends how you drive? I have Pirelli p zeros and find them quite noisy. I have a couple of Dunlops to try next. I think the tyre noise subject has been done to death, but would be nice to find some quieter tyres

Great fun & kept Phil in his Datsun honest :assflash:

They configured it International in the morning & Coastal in the afternoon. TBH i wasn't a fan of the Corkscrew as found any line through there a challenge, but the weather was excellent & it's a great stretch of tarmac. I was very pleased with how the M5 handled & very few if any road cars were faster, although Phil's GT-R was probably lapping a touch quicker & even quicker had i been driving it :bigblink:

Me thinks as i've found in previous cars, that Spa will still be the epitome when it comes to tracking a slightly overweight road car.

Although not an Audi, you'll get an idea.
