4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Picked the car up from Audi a month ago and was told the car had been through the 145 point approved used check twice, once when taken in and for piece of mind MOT'd and checked again for me.
After a week I hadn't personally driven the car as its mainly driven by the wife so checked the tyre pressures and found them 5psi low all round so filled them and thought it strange they were low. Strange out of 145 points checked tyre pressures weren't one!
Then a week later I asked the wife to check them on the screen MMI to see what they said and she asked if that was why it was pulling to the left...mmm
Anyway asked the dealer to check alignment and today got it back and wow its so much more alive ...They said oh it needed a 'small' adjustment on rear toe and camber well 3 hours later and its a sports car now rather than it feeling meh
I also queried That after 500 miles the oil was showing at minimum, they say 500ml every 300miles is normal?? That sounds to me like a leak !
Ive had some fast cars and ive never had consumption like that unless i'm seeing a cloud of blue smoke out back to warrant it !!
Is that what everyone else is seeing consumption wise?

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Hi Pt7550,
That does sound like a lot of oil to me BUT I suppose it depends on how the car has been driven and looked after previously? I have covered just over 6K miles since the last oil change and my level is showing just over 3/4 full??!! When was the last oil change?
Cheers,
Lig.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
I found my car changed massively once I had it aligned and it was only a couple of weeks old although I did lower it. However after the alignment it turned in so much better so I think it needed aligning as soon as it left the factory. I read they only do a rudimentary check when built.
Regarding oil consumption, I found that the car was fine for the first 6000 miles after an oil change but then it would start to need regular top ups until the next oil change. This was the case with both my RS4 and RS6.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Just reread your post; half a litre every 300 miles? No way! I though it said every 3000 miles which is not unreasonable after the initial 6k on new oil.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Using that much oil in such a short distance is definitely cause for concern. Either it's burning the oil or it's leaking. Could be leaking from the sump plug. The under tray prevents a slight leak from being spotted so fingers crossed it's that rather something sinister...

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Thanks guys
It had a service before pick up so I 'assume' it was full. I didn't check it as I guess was just giddy for picking the car up. It took me a couple of weeks to get round to going through the menus after I realised it didn't have a dipstick! I wasn't sure on exact milage when I checked but from picking up to checking oil was 2 weeks and it was on min on MMI
I topped up and it was close to the top line.
It was the dealer that checked with service and said 500ml per 300 miles is 'normal'
I checked this morning and it was half way on gauge...
How accurate are the electronic gauges??

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
I’ve done roughly 7k miles since the last oil change, only topped up once since then with a litre.
500ml per 300 miles is not right, surely if it was a leak you’d have seen some sort of oil patch on the driveway or road where you normally park it.
Sounds like the dealer is talking out there arse.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
It spends also how you drive “drive it like you stolen” then you will need top up more frequently)
Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
You couldn’t lose that much oil through a leak without it being obvious. My car never used a drop between services (9k). You must be burning it and that level of consumption is not normal.
However, I would top up again so it is full and monitor over next 1000 miles to be sure.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
But it’s normal that oil is being used, I am not saying that it should stay always full but can be half also ok, it depends how you drive, one can drive like a pensioner other like a hooligan)Markp wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 3:55 pmYou couldn’t lose that much oil through a leak without it being obvious. 500ml in 300 miles? On a race track maybeTadass910 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 8:42 pmBut it’s normal that oil is being used, I am not saying that it should stay always full but can be half also ok, it depends how you drive, one can drive like a pensioner other like a hooligan)Markp wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 3:55 pmYou couldn’t lose that much oil through a leak without it being obvious. That is 1.7 litres / 1000 miles which is not normal no matter how you drive (on public roads at least).
Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
500ml in 300 miles not normal, I just wanted to say that oil consumption is being used when you drive 9000 miles, it can drop half so that’s normal, I am not saying that in op situation is ok, he definitely needs to check his car at Audi dealerMarkp wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 2:30 pm500ml in 300 miles? Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
I will be monitoring it with milage going forward.
Does anyone know the amount from min to max on the (electronic) dipstick? I topped up with a litre as I expected it to be the amount full min-max but it was just under the full mark. also I did check when cold but reading through the manual it says up to temp then switch off and wait.

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Hi pt7550,
I can't find where it says the difference between min and max, but I would guess 1.5L. However, yes do check when warm and I would leave it, if its just under max. You dont want to have to take any out!!
Interestingly though, it does state in the manual..... 'Depending on how you drive and the conditions in which the car is used, oil consumption can be up to 0.8ltr/1000km' So the dealer are about right

Re: 4 wheel alignment and oil consumption
Well they are 30% out which is a bit beyond “about right”, so they are wrongLig wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 4:28 pmHi pt7550,
