Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Morning all,
My stone chip guard stuff on the rear door\arch\sill is looking a bit tatty and discoloring slightly so I am thinking of replacing it.
Has anyone done this successfully?
I am more than happy with the application (as I have done this before on bikes and on my old Porsche when I had it repainted) BUT just wondering if I will be able to remove the old successfully without it pulling any paint off!
I plan to use a bit of heat and hope this will soften the adhesive and will aid successful removal.
Has anyone done this??
Cheers,
Lig.

Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
I didn't get that bit changed on my RS4 but had all the front end PPF replaced.
This was applied from new by the previous owner but was just half bonnet, wings, full bumper, front pillars and mirrors. It always annoyed me that the half bonnet and wings never lined up so I have had full bonnet and wings.
The only part that pulled some paint off was one of the mirror caps as these were gloss black and painted by the dealer. These were changed from the Matt alloy ones.
I was told so long as it is factory paint it should be ok.
I think so long as you do what you say with heat it will be fine.

Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Hi Lig,
I replaced mine with some I bought off eBay from Aliath. Think they were £18 for the set for both sides.
They were pretty yellow & stood out on the nardo grey paintwork like a sore thumb!
Easy to remove with a little heat from a heat gun but make sure you mark the edges to ensure you get them in the right place.
The only difficulty I had was Aliath recommend that you don’t use a water solution & stick them straight off the backing which was a little tricky to get them exactly where the OEM one’s had been.
I got a couple of bubbles on the drivers side which I can’t get rid of so am going to re-try & will maybe try a water solution next time as once you have started to stick them on there is no movement & if they are not perfect you are knackered!
I’ll take some pictures so you can see my efforts!
Good luck if you decide to give it go yourself
Cheers
Chris

Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Hi Lig,
I know a couple of folk that have replaced the film with self healing PPF. It’s a lot thinner and less visible than the OEM film.

Cheers for all the advice chaps.
I am going to go for it!
I bought from this seller on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-RS6-4G- ... 2749.l2649
I contacted them as I wanted the film to be 'Oraguard' which is a German made product that Porsche use and I have used before and been very happy with it. You apply this stuff with a bit of soapy water and then squeegee it out and it goes on perfect (or it did on my Porsche).
They confirmed it was Oraguard film.
I will be sure to mark the area beforehand to make sure I get it in the right place!
Thanks again and I will let you know how I get on!
Cheers,
Lig.

Is it self healing? If so then the instructions normally say you can put a pin prick in to release the air then it'll heal.Crezzy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 10:48 pmHi Lig,

Good shout MikeFish, I’ll check it out!
Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
I recently had a SMART repair for a chip on my rear N/S door where some tool had opened their door into mine. The repair fella had to remove the stone chip protection from the door as he didn't want the lacquer to go over the top of the tape.
I can't be arsed fitting it myself so was hoping that Audi would do it when it next goes in for a service. Has anyone got any idea on costs? Imagine it will be hellish...
Cheers!

Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Cost of the actual film is around £25 for all 6 pieces.
Fitting is \ should be dead easy providing you use some mild soapy water. Audi will probably charge an hours labour £200+vat ish!!
I haven't received the film yet, but when I do I will let you know how I get on with removal \ fitting...
Cheers,
Lig.

Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
I can't imagine a little piece like that on a relatively flat panel is hard to fit.
Re: Replacing stone chip protection film on rear arch
Done!!
It easily came off with a bit of heat. For some reason the two pieces on the metal came off easier. The one on the sill left quite a bit of glue on, so had to use some Goo Gone on it!
Once off I could see more that they had discolored and were quite yellow.
Applying the new pieces was real easy, just had to use lots of water, and then squeegie all the bubbles\water out. Really pleased with the result. From stand height you can't really see the new are on there. Its hard to see the lower new piece in the NEW images.

If anyone is thinking of replacing theirs, then I recommend the Oraguard (Orafoil brand). Its great to work with.
Cheers,
Lig.
