Dashcam install on rear tailgate anyone?

Post by koruki » Wed Jun 05, 2019 5:43 am

Hi guys,

Just wondering if any of you have installed a rear dashcam? I installed one in the front without issues but just wanted to know how people are doing it on the rear. As you know the rear opens up and is separated from the body of the car. The cars native wiring goes through the two arms lifting the tailgate up. How are you all getting power to your cams?

Thanks for any info.

I have a rear Blackvue dashcam; I have had it for two years, now. It's still in the box because of the issues you have highlighted. I am looking forward to some guidance on this, too. Not a helpful post, but I like to show solidarity with my fellow man when it's appropriate.

I fed mine through the corrugated rubber fitting on the left. It does mean that the rear upper roof trim and the tailgate trims needs removing in order to feed and secure the cable correctly. Been working fine for a number of years now.

I wish there was a way to hook up a harddrive to the inbuilt systems - Seems daft installing 2 more cameras when it already has front, back and 360 cameras installed - should just be able to hook into those and constantly record

Agreed. I thought about this before but the built in cameras are far too poor to be of any use for something like this. I thought this might be something we see in the next generation but I haven't heard of the C8 having it. Maybe the C9 will.

I have a Blackvue front and rear and it works like a charm. I didn't fit it however so can't actually help with your query but it clearly can be done no problem. I went off for a coffee when the guys fitted it. All done in an hour. Zero signs of the fitting. All trim etc when back on 100% as before.
Currently running:
18 plate Lamborghini Huracan Performante (5.2l of V10 naturally aspirated craziness)
67 plate RS6 Performance (fully loaded)
66 plate Range Rover Autobiography (for wafting around)
16 plate Mini Cooper S convertible (lots of fun but rather skittish when thrashed)

Favourite car ever owned:
1971 Citroen DS21 - The Goddess (pure art on wheels)

I'm actually shocked it's not been developed. You essentially need - wiring so that the cameras are powered on ignition vs reverse signal, splice into the video feed and run it into an external video card which then saves onto a harddrive. Probably have to run the whole thing through a Raspberry Pi so you could write some logic around when to overwrite stuff.

Might have a look into developing something...
