Driving off without the keys

Post by aerospace100 » Tue Dec 04, 2018 10:48 pm

Hi Guys,

The cold mornings have started and the windscreens are covered in frost. I'm not going to stand there scratching the windscreen free of frost or spraying a can of deicer before work. Instead, I'm going to turn the engine on and then have a shower while hoping my car hasn't been stolen.

I have tried turning the car on, then exiting and locking the car from the outside - doesn't work.

Could I do the following:

1) Turn the engine on and take the keys with me back into the locked house. Then when a thief steels the car, would the car cut out at the point at which it realises there are no keys on-board?

2) In a previous post, someone mentioned an aftermarket auxiliary heater. Did we determine this didn't exist for the RS6?

Are those screen shots from the myaudi app (or whatever it's called). May need to download that.

Regarding the OP's question about what happens if a scrote drives off with the car when it's warming up - don't know about Audi, but other cars I have had will not cut out once the car realises there is no key. The car will of course not start again so the thief only gets one journey. One journey is enough to never see the car again of course. Not sure if auto stop/start will mean it won't restart. Probably should I guess.
Currently running:
18 plate Lamborghini Huracan Performante (5.2l of V10 naturally aspirated craziness)
67 plate RS6 Performance (fully loaded)
66 plate Range Rover Autobiography (for wafting around)
16 plate Mini Cooper S convertible (lots of fun but rather skittish when thrashed)

Favourite car ever owned:
1971 Citroen DS21 - The Goddess (pure art on wheels)

Good answer and perhaps not worth the risk. I guess I'll get the deicer out in the morning.

I always use warm (not hot) water, poured over all the glass after starting the car. Works better than de-icer spray.
The added bonus is that as it warms the glass any internal condensation disappears too.
Usually lasts long enough for the engine heat to take over.

Heated screen is a bonus if you have it as well, my non-Audi has it and my Audi doesn't - an option the original buyer didn't bother with. :bash:

Not an option on the C7. The technology used to be owned by Ford for many years so no other cars had it. Then Ford also used it on other car brands that it owned like Jaguar. I still don't think any Audi has this.

If the engine is on and you drive off with the key you will get an out of range warning on the dashboard but the car will continue to run. Won't restart again though. Not sure about stop / start as mine is always turned off.

Taking the key out of the car then locking the doors might work.
Or fit an aftermarket alarm that has remote start. Then just press a button on the key fob and the car will start up but remain locked and alarmed. And if anyone manages to break into it the engine will cut out as soon as they try to put it into gear or press the accelerator.

Oh yes they do, it first appeared on the A8 almost 20 years ago! Not sure how wide it's available now.

And yes Ford had a version that was very widely used, our 1998 Ford Focus (one of the very first, now long gone) even had it.
I guess Audi were happy to pay Fords fees to use it on the A8, and Ford were probably happy as they had no competing model.
