Did the engine still run when your steering and other electronics failed?

Yes was all running, the steering wheel was a full 270 degrees from straight ahead when it reengaged when the police arrived on the m25 and there was a whole number of warnings on the dashboard, I have a video I think somewhere.

I see. My friend's RS3 8V had similar problem but the engine also killed. He took the car to an independent garage and went through the cabling of the car and found there is a safety catch on a main electric cable came loose.
