Dashcam

Post by DrB » Mon Apr 18, 2016 9:28 am

Hi.

I just picked up my new car yesterday....very happy.

Now I would like to keep it looking good. Has anyone fitted a dashcam? I'm looking for the most discrete one.

Blackvue seem to be popular nowadays.

Blackvue seem respected but not the most discrete, certainly worth considering BUT there are reports of issues with DAB reception if you want the rear cam fitted. (Particularly in A6) I think it's also possible to fit only the rear cam as a front cam if you want more discrete, but this will sacrifice resolution and bit-rate I think.

The most discrete (the one I have been considering for a while) is the Kooloung K1S. Appears to be well reviewed and very discrete. (It might also be branded as innov K1)

No info on long term reliability, and I think the sound quality is poor but not relevant for me, as is having a visible screen to review the footage. If I had to choose now it would be one of the these two.

Would be good to know your thoughts if you decide.

I've got a Blackvue fitted to mine. had about a year with no issues. easy to review the footage using the wireless and Blackvue app.

Is it quite discrete? Do you have the rear camera?

I went with a Transcend a month ago as good write ups and reliable. Wanted to buy from a Shop (Halfords) in case of returns also got it in a sale and then 10% off for British cycling org membership. had a roadhawk for many years and time to replace.

Small screen fitted to the left of my rear mirror in the rs6 (from drivers seat) . works well. run a cable to the centre arm rest usb port for power. nicely hidden easy to do.

Looked at one with front and rear etc but in the end didn't want the hassle of the wires and a 'central' box.

Pic of Transcend - if you click on the picture to enlarge - you can then just see the camera to the side of the rear mirror.

RS6Chris, I have a Blackvue in exactly the same place as you but I really struggled to get the wire down to the fusebox. How did you get down the A-pillar? Or did you go down via a different route? Thanks.

+1 for blackvue. I went for the DR650 (front and rear). Caught a hit and run on the rear that the culprit would have got away with without the camera.

why do you guys buy these?? Just wondering as I HATE them. There is more than enough big brother without everyone using dash cams and reporting every stupid thing to the coppers!!

I am maybe just old fashioned (or just old lol)

Having been the victim of both a hit and run causing damage to my car(culprit would have been found if I had a dash am running) AND and accident where a young girl ran into me and told a total pack of lies to her insurer to the circumstances(she had just passed her test and I assume realised her insurance was going to go through roof) that's why I have one.

I agree I hate big brother type <beep>....BUT with the amount of pond feeders who couldn't care less about me and my pride and joy I feel it's my only option these days should the worst happen.

The worlds full of wide boys, chancers and low life's on the road these days.....you've got to look after number one I'm afraid.

Of course should you do something silly yourself you could incriminate yourself!!!....or take SD card out and chuck it!!...

Hi mate

Wire runs at top of windscreen tucked under headliner, down A piller again tucked behind trim, behind end of dashboard trim, under glove box(using little Blackvue cable clips) behind transmission tunnel trim, up into armrest power socket.

It only works when ignition on of course at min....my Porsche ran all the time as always had power to 12v socket.
