After selling my C6 RS6 I have finally put an order in for a x drive 335d touring. For anyone that doesnt know the stats on these they shocked me, 0-60 in 4.9 (4.8) for the saloon, 4 wheel drive, £150 tax per year, 50mpg combined. I guess i wont get that.

Its nearly as fast as the old M3.

The deals at the moment are great, for cash you can get one for £34k.

Spec compares a lot better to the S3 and its nearly a direct rival to the current RS4 but for a lot less money.

Wondered if anyone else out there had considered one, or even took one out for a test drive?

The emissions on the new diesels are very low, its the older cars pre 2010 that are the issue, not diesel in general.

My C6 RS6 was 4.6...and drank fuel like no tomorrow. Its emissions were pretty poor too, as were its running costs. Any car under 5 secs is fast, this was the benchmark only a few years ago for super cars!

It's the particulates that will eventually bite with diesel.

Still the devils fuel. And as Audi will find out at Le Mans this year, not good for performance either!

The Diesel Nazi's have done a good job on you it appears.

This all started with the 535d Sport that was close to a 5sec car with it's twin scroll turbos & a bit of a tune. No matter how it's justified, you still have to put gloves on to fill them up, share breathing air with truckers & drivers of old pug 205 diesels in the dirty area of the 'Petrol' Station & when trying to reach these headline figures, cover every poor fecker behind you in such a way we all look like the label character from that famous marmalade of old.

I had a D4 A8 Tdi & totally get the benefits of modern Turbo Diesel's, but only when NOT spoken about in the same breath as 'Performance'. Also had an X5 M50D for a few weeks last year & that had similar stats to the 3 Series you're getting, but no getting away from it's dieselness & that is all :ban:

Not at all. If I needed a motorway mile cruncher I know where I'd go. Though I'd also need to employ someone to drive me!

I don't and for POWER, petrol wins.

I hear you all in terms of diesel, but i was looking for a German estate, preferably new, quick (less than 5 secs) with good handling which was cheaper to run and own than a C6 RS6. I looked at a new or nearly new RS4 and wasnt impressed. The cost seems too high and its dated compared to the newer cars. That left me a nearly new RS6 which are upwards of £60k or an E class AMG, a CLS sportback or C class AMG. The C class was dated. The E class i didnt like, the CLS was nice but too expensive.

I literally couldnt find another German estate with the same stats, buying and running costs.

I even considered a S3 sportback, but it wasnt big enough and costs a lot once you add a few options. I ummed and arrred about an S4 estate but again they have been out for a while and look a bit dated and are still roughly 40k new.

I paid £36k for the BMW and it included the M Sport plus pack and heated seats. 19's, Harmon stereo upgrade, etc

I definitely think its the bargain out of the bunch.
