I'm in the market for a tablet / e-reader for the wife for Christmas but have no idea where to start. i-Pad would be an idea but an expensive one for reading books? She loves books but our house is beginning to look like a library and one of these seems a fab idea and she can use on the move / on holiday. I hear good things about Nook Colour with Android App, a colour reader would be best.

But would anyone who has taken the plunge and bought one give a newbee to this area some constructiove advice?

14 views and no one? Do you lot not read books / e-books and are all instead with your heads are all under car bonnets or stripping engines on dining room tables?

Kindle's on my Christmas list.

Kindle gets a good good rep from a mate of mine. Uses it everywhere and all the time. Good battery apparently. Prob buy my missus one for Xmas is she behaves herself.

Only problem for me is that it is B&W rather than colour which I would like for the kids books with illustrations to show our kids.

I bought the missus a Kindle about 5 months ago when she went into hospital for a minor op and would be at home recovering. and she likes to read but I wasn't 100% sure that she'd get on with it.

She now say's it's the best thing I ever bought her (better even than the new mop and the new hose for the vacuum I bought her last time). Seriously though, it's a brilliant bit of kit and I'd highly recommend it. She takes it with her everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Battery life is amazing (due to the type of display), OK it's only b+w but then it is really for written books.

I got the wi-fi version which also has a basic web browser and you can download new books using whispernet? which uses the 3G network or something like that so she can get new books virtually anywhere.

My advise would be to buy a Kindle and just use it for written books. If your kids are getting into reading then that's brilliant but stick with proper books and keep them off the techie stuff, they'll get plenty of that soome enough and if the books are interesting enough, the fact it isn't on a little screen won't matter to them.

I'd go for the Kindle too (don't they do a colour one now?).
I was bought a Sony eReader last Christmas (because I used to read stupid amounts and the girlfriend thought it would be great for beddy-byes).
Unfortunately I didn't use it... not once. There was no backlight and it just didn't suit my reading position. It went straight back to the Shop.
Hence try a Kindle... it's a lot cheaper, I think weighs less.... and maybe a back-light ?

I had a look at an Archos 70d e-reader yesterday, 7" colour, lighter than a Kindle, backlit, anti glare screen, 4GB memmory, Wi-Fi and 3G with 8 hour battery life plus is an MP3 and HD video player and all for pennies £90 from Comet presently which is a fair bit less than the equivalent Kindle at present. Think I'll go that route. Kindle is good but given the Archos is also an andriod I just think it will have better usability hwn the missus has enugh of it and gives it to the kids.
