Hallo all,

I have a bit of a bad luck story. The last garage (non audi) to do a toothed belt change before I bought my RS4, apparently did not tighten the main nut on the crank pulley. Due to this, the nut loosened, the woodruff key sheared, and I now have probably massive damage to the engine, although we don't know what the top end is like yet? I had an extended warranty, but it looks like bad repairs are not covered under it!

I am looking at the distinct possibility of a replacement engine.

If any of you can advise, I would like advice on the following.

1) should I attempt an engine rebuild, and where should I get it done?
2) if I need a new engine, where could I source one?
3) do I have any legal recourse to get compensation from this garage who clearly didn't do their job? It was late 2008 and the car in the possession of the previous owner!!

Thats a tough call, 2008 will be tricky, if it has been to have a service since then they may say the next person may have touched it.

If it has not been for a service they may say neglect, as the can has not been maintained.

Sorry to hear your bad luck. I would have thought a nut would have worked loose early then 18 months as a result of bad repairs. With this in mind I don't see that bad repairs is a reason to void a warranty claim?

The main sprocket bolt stays in when a cambelt is changed, it only needs to come off if they had to change the oil seal behind the sprocket. There is a ring of allen bolts that holds the pulley to the sprocket, these get removed when a cambelt is changed.
