WANTED - RS6 C5 Gearbox, or Info on Recon.

Post by Frago » Wed Jan 20, 2016 9:02 am

Hi,
I am looking for an Audi RS6 Avant gearbox for a 2003 C5, or any information on a reputable company for a recondition.

Thanks All,

Frago.

Go to the C5 forum on here and have a look or else use the search facility. There is always lots of threads on the infamous gearbox.
Mine was done 50k ago by Chester Autos and is still running perfectly, just changed the oil and filter in it and it was perfect condition.

Or if you're feeling brave and want huge bhp then go for a manual conversion, but that will probably cost more than what your car is worth at the mo with a knackered box in it.

There is a wealth of information on here and many other places - use the search function.

There are also a lot of good reconditioners, many can be recommended depending on where you live. A location may be helpful in directing you towards a reputable establishment.

It is gonna be expensive though. I know that theres currently a few used boxes on ebay - bearing in mind the engine has to pretty much come all the way out to change it - its a distinct gamble as to whether its worth it or not - especially if the history of the vehicle it is from is unknown.

If you have cash to burn there's also places that can uprate the box for you.

Bear in mind that it may not be just the 'box that's at fault. When mine went into 'limp mode' @130k miles I took it to a gearbox specialist who said it could be a.) the gearbox/TC, b.) the TCU or c.) both. As one of my faults was a checksum error i.e. the TCU was possibly throwing out duff information they suggested addressing this first, being the cheaper option.

Fixing broken TCUs reliably is a no-no despite what some may claim. I bought a used working one for a fraction of the price of a new unit and it's fine - MRC even remapped it for me.

Of course, Murphy's Law ruled the TCU be replaced and the 'box/TC rebuilt.

And contrary to the various stories doing the rounds about the 'C5 chocolate gearbox', as long as they are serviced correctly by a reputable tuner (2 spring to mind) they are certainly up to the job, even on tuned cars.
