You can apply for a logbook online if it is genuinely lost. Just make sure you have a written receipt from the seller and take a copy of his photo I'd, showing him living at the address he sold it from.
Be very cautious however about his story that he took it as a p/x, very convenient if he doesn't want to own up to any faults!!
HPI check also a must!!

You are going to hand over that amount of cash without seeing, signing, and posting off the the V5?! You are completely mad imo - it just is
NOT worth the risk for the sake of waiting another day or two for it to arrive
He could write the receipt with the blood of a 16 year old virgin on gold leaf gilded parchment........ it will mean dick all if the car isn't his to sell. The rightful owner can / will just take the car back, and you'll have no money and no car
(exactly the same as buying a car privately that is financed - the finance company owns the car, not the 'driver' selling it, the finance company will just take it back off you etc)

I don't understand, there are plenty of cars out there to look at/choose, you just need to travel a little and relax when you first see one. In my experience it was the one owner cars that had the most issues. It seems people had got fed up fixing the niggles as they always had another car to drive. Most the 3/4 owners had had lost of new parts as everyone wants to tinker with a "new" car. In my instance I powder coated the wheels, fixed the dropped doors, changed parking sensors, fitted freeview TV , renewed the vacuum hoses( which were throwing up so many codes, it was why the previous owner sold the car after doing water pump, alternator, gearbox, belts etc) I,ve even changed the brake line that goes to the front offside wheel which I'm told is an expensive byt*h to do but was a doodle. I think most of my fixes have been just car related and not RS6 items, it is only a car after all, though one that can be abused all too easily. So my only advice is patience when buying and learn how to do as many things as you can.
previous cars
2.2 audi coupe
UR quattro
URS6 avant (still owned currently stored with Audi for promos)
C5 RS6 avant
