How many miles is too many miles?
How many miles is too many miles?
Hi All
I've just copied my post from the Welcome board:
Looking to buy my first RS4 and found what I think is a nice 63 plate car with 75,0000 miles. It looks to be in great condition and comes with a warranty from an Audio dealership. It seems totally original and apparently has a full service history.
Would be keen to hear what anyone's thoughts would be on this mileage and what problems I would expect to find. Have to say I'm a little nervous about the high mileage.
Appreciate any feedback.
Cheers
Mark

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
I think the RS4 is good for lots of miles. I think the 100,000 mile barrier still exists as with all cars that there os a drop off after this but it is minimal with the RS4. engines are good and maintenance is the only real issue.
I came from an E92 m3 where anything over 120k was good going and not worth a lot

Hi Mark
Servicing and condition are key in my opinion. If it looks like it has worn its miles well and back up by proper maintenance should be good if price is right.
You won’t regret it. They’re awesome cars. I also think a lot of the negatives you are over egged like most things. The B7 is a bit more problematic than the B8 it would seem.
Appreciate you didn’t ask, but mine is for sale:

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
Hi Guys
Thanks for the feedback.
I got some service history back from the dealer and there doesn't appear to be any service history until 16,000 miles. On my original post, Stuart Barriskell mentioned:
"As ever, full history is essential for these cars, is it standard, any mods like suspension change ?.. the DRC can be troublesome with many swapping out the DRC for aftermarket options mainly due to cost as the main driver.
Might be an idea to post up spec, service, and maintenance history. That way, you may receive more in-depth answers which should help you decide..the price is important too ?..
Cheers. S."
Looks like this car has had Bilstein coil overs installed .... how would this affect value? I would prefer original including all it's quirks.
Below is a brief summary of the service history and I'd really appreciate any feedback on this.
Date Mileage Type of Service/Work
06/02/2015 16,108 Carried our service recall 69k5 criterion 01
28/04/2015 19,961 Oil & air filters
14/01/2016 No mileage
noted Oil change
16/08/2016 29,851 Brakes & key battery
10/02/2017 30,585 Oil change
15/01/2018 34,011 Full service, Coilover kit, Damper control unit, gear box service
27/04/2021 55,130 Oil change
21/06/2022 64,417 Oil change
17/05/2023 74,002 Oil change, brake fluid, pollen filters
18/05/2023 74,002 Oil for final drive, ATF, spark plugs
Cheers

I have seen your car, it looks fantastic and while I like the "sports seats", this will be a daily driver so not sure they're 100% practical for me. Having said that, are you able to pm what you want for the car and a bit of history?
Cheers

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
Would agree with the comments from the others and I would prioritise history albeit it depends on whether you might be selling at some point in the foreseeable- if not then higher mileage might not bother you.
I bought my one coming up 2 years ago with 67k (ticked all the boxes for me - pan roof, daytona grey, black pack) and have put about 5k on it since.
Only thing I would say is that if I were to buy again, I'd try and find out if its had a carbon clean / injectors cleaned / balanced. If not you might be able to use that to knock the price down from Audi. I shared some pictures of mine in a separate thread done approaching 72k and unless you're buying one with super low miles, I would budget for that. They will all inevitably carbon up and that could cause issues. Its not made a huge difference to the performance (slightly perkier) but surprisingly now getting up to 30mpg on mainly motorway miles to work. And have the peace of mind that the valves and injectors aren't caked in carbon.
You won't regret getting one though - apart from regular pit stops for V Power it's such a great all rounder. Even my dogs love it!

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
Mark..
A forum car has many benefits.
A. It inevitably will have been looked after.
B. Servicing will normally have been adhered to.
C. Generally, the seller will have posted on here, so you can follow the vehicles history as such.
D. members on here will no doubt know the car, so it's miles less likely you'll be buying a "pig in a poke," as we say up here.
As a side issue, they have loads of street cred, I've lost count of "nice car mate" and the local Corsa/Clio/Focus 80 quid back box toerags ogling it. Only last week I was sitting about 70 on the A82 and this Focus pulled up along side me, the passenger pointing ahead and basically asking me to boot it..which I duly obliged and disappeared into the distance !
Matts car looks a good shout, clean, maintained, bodywork in good order, set of Michelin hoops, un marked rims, wing backs (very rare on B8s), and good spec.. He's not a mate of mine in case you're wondering, lol...
I had a B7 with Wingbacks. During 3 years ownership, I knocked 60k up in that time. They are amazing to sit in irrespective of use and as for driving, well just jump in and try one, you won't want to stop, they are tremendous.
My B8 is a forum car purchased last year with 22k on the clock, mileage aside, I bought with confidence. It's now at 42k. I buy my cars to drive, not to sit outside the house.
What kind of bread is this place asking, and what's your budget ?..
Get one bought, you'll love it !..

Good point about the carbon/injector clean, I think the car is priced fairly high for what it is.vishmr2 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 11, 2023 10:38 pmWould agree with the comments from the others and I would prioritise history albeit it depends on whether you might be selling at some point in the foreseeable- if not then higher mileage might not bother you.

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
I bought mine just under a year ago with 96,000 miles on it. It’s a 2013 plate, Daytona grey and quite well equipped.
It had a decent service history, including replacement gearbox by Audi at 88,000 miles. That might’ve put some off, but I’m pretty relaxed about it.
I’m up to a little over 110,000 now, and I love it to bits. As Stuart says, you get just the right amount of attention in it and it’s an absolute blast when you want to give it the beans.
I intend to keep it, which is why I was ‘fairly’ relaxed about the miles. My man maths was that I wanted the last of the V8s while you still can. The plan is in about 3 or 4 years I’ll stop using it as my daily and buy some faceless microwave on wheels for that.
Some of the Facebook groups are quite helpful if you haven’t searched them already.
My only slight regret is that I didn’t hold out for the ultimate colour and spec combo, but life’s short isn’t it?
Keep us posted though!

Re: How many miles is too many miles?
They are fantastic cars and very easy to use as an everyday car. There is a fantastic feeling you get with that engine and exhaust note, so glad I bit the bullet.
I’ve had it 18 months now and it’s time to move on (EV company car beckons). The ante has upped a bit and hence the price reducing to £27950, as I’m also looking to overhaul my late father’s E46 M3 which he had from new so need the garage space for that.
Like most cars I sell, I’ll probably regret it!
It’s good see a lot more activity on this forum lately!

I personally would avoid fitting coilovers to my car, and I say that with respect to those who have, a well looked after stock motor is simply more desirable when it comes to selling on, we're all enthusiasts and it will be more than likely an enthusiast that will buy from you when the time comes to sell on, your average punter will have no interest in one of these cars..

For us this is a daily driver which my wife will also use, how to you go with those seats getting in and out of the car? It really might be worth a plane ticket.
I think I've regretted every car I've sold especially the 4.5 Cerbera which I bought new and the manual 928 GTS, such is life!

It does seem that these cars handle the mileage very well, the leather in particular doesn't show its age at all.goram wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:43 amI bought mine just under a year ago with 96,000 miles on it. It’s a 2013 plate, Daytona grey and quite well equipped.

Couldn't agree more, it seems like "proper cars" will be really hard to find so keen to get back into a V8 as soon as possible.
There does seem to be such a wide range of specs out there, I'm trying not to over think and just find a nice car.
