2013 RS4 sports exhaust sounds pathetic

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for a while but honestly have to now post for my sanity.

I have two RS cars, a PFL 2016 RS3 and a 2013 RS4. Both cars have the sports exhausts and mag ride etc.

Problem is.. the RS3 sounds awesome. The RS4 sounds quieter than a 320D. The drive select button makes zero change to noise on the RS4, whereas on the RS3 it works as expected. Dynamic makes it loud. It also makes it pop and bang on downshifts etc. The RS4 genuinely is almost so quiet you'd forget it's a performance car.

After reading a few threads here, I had a look in the tailpipes at the vales and lo and behold, they were always closed. I've now opened them with penetrant and a bit of force and then clamped off the vacuum system.. but.. still no good noises or real increase in volume.

Are there more valves up stream or is the RS4 just quiet with the sports exhaust? I test drove another 2013 car and I swear it snarled, snapped and popped...

Thanks all
Dan

Sounds like something isn't working as it should.

My B8 with the valves open although wasn't anti socially loud it still made a proper good noise that would make anyone turn their head.

That's exactly what I thought it should do. It's barely noticeable as a powerful V8 even when in dynamic mode.

Do both tailpipes have valves or is it just the inner ones?

Yep. Something not right mate. My car has the sports exhaust and is loud, especially on Dynamic.

Having mine in dynamic definately makes a difference. No pops and bangs but a lovely screaming V8 especially at high revs. Best get it looked at

Agree with the above. Mine in dynamic makes a very noticeable V8 snarl above 3k revs, and pops/blips when downshifting.

Is it engaging sport shift in the gearbox and noticeably quicker throttle response when you select dynamic? If not could be some electrical issue or safety device restricting performance including fully opening up the exhaust.

Maybe get Audi or a garage to check for ECU fault codes. Could be a simple and cheap first step

Thanks all

Definitely no faults being registered ECU or gearbox wise, I've access to the proper gear having worked in motorsports for a while.

It definitely feels like a monster in sport and dynamic, at least compared to my RS3. It's far more linear as expected but even at motorway limits it's pretty brutal and defined with its power delivery.

Just the sound never matches it!

I felt exactly the same as you my 2016 RS3 sounded fantastic probably the best Audi sports exhaust I’d ever had and I’ve had a few through the ranges but all RS. In the end I gave up with the sports exhaust on the 2014 RS4 B8 and went Milltek cat back resonated but with the straight through front sections from the American market. I’m now a very happy RS4 owner 😁😁😁 Well once the knocking has been found 😫😫
