Hiya - car in for its 3 year service @23k. Fronts discs on 33.2 mm but dealer recommends replacement as new pads may cause noise as a minor lip. Anyone just replaced pads and experienced noise?

They start at 34mm, and have a min thickness of 32.4mm so yours are half worn! If you really wanted you could get them skimmed to take the lips off. Dealer is pulling a fast one, they see rs owners as easy money!!

They are probably the easiest pad change I have ever done, max 30mins per side. I had the same dilemma. Was quoted new discs, for less than £80 for trw pads I thought I would give it a go. 5,000 miles later they are fine for road use!!

Thanks - i have the discs already as bought a year ago in advance. Has anyone actually had a squeaky brake with only pads?

They tried that one on me last year i new the disks were fine i just told them to clean up tge disks and removed the lip cant remember yhe cost but wasnt extortionate oh i did get new pads as they were just about done
For reference i havd done 33k and im just about minimum thickness

Appreciate the responses. Current thinking is replace discs an then keep old ones and get them lightly skimmed ready for next time pads and changed

Dealer is talking <beep>. The lip will not cause noise, the lip is outwith the pad contact area, hence the lip.

I just fitted yellow stuff for £167 from carparts4less, my discs are about 33.4mm ish.

I did fit TRW earlier this year, took them off as i found they were <beep>, worse than the original pads. the EBC's seem to be an improvement overall, the de-glazing break in compound really cleaned up the discs from the TRW deposits which has helped a lot i think.

Small lip is normal wear and nothing to worry about.

I was just worried about squeaky brakes

The squeak is caused by the pad material build up on the disks
if this is just started to happen then 8 -10 breaking hard form 70 to 10 mph will clear it (i felt sick after this so if you dont your not breaking hard enough )
but if this has been a problem for a while then they will probably need skimming as the deposit build up will be much to just burn off with hard breaking

I would only change the pads then do the whole lot next time.

Alex, interesting that they have an actual measurement for the level of allowable runout on the discs. Audi were concerned about this on mine but they dealt with the slight lip and cleaned up the bell housing. They tried to charge me but I pushed back and they did it under warranty.

Of course there is a limit on run out. Even aftermarket cheap discs say to measure the run out - but no one ever bothers to read the paper instructions..... let alone actually do it!

I just wasn't aware of it however I'd spent a lot of time talking to Audi about my concerns about run out and they never once mentioned it let alone measure it (at least as far as I'm aware).

The disc bells are very thin on these, run out can easily be developed if all faces aren’t perfectly clean and free from burrs (even rust). Also, wheels should be torqued up correctly to prevent further uneven loading through bell clamping.
