Potential theft

Post by Mooney3019 » Wed Jul 12, 2017 11:03 pm

Got a feeling my car is being lined up to be stolen, various cars driving up our cul de sac pulling up looking at the car, both cars no tax no mot no insurance, reported to police

That's bad news buddy. Maybe an idea to hide it away at a family or friends place for a while.

Disklok, that will stop them. Too difficult and noisy to remove

Disklok is a must, mine is always fitted and if you haven't disabled the OBD then the car can be stolen easily in minutes.

Sounds similar to when I had mine. I live on a cul-de-sac and the RS lived on the small open driveway in full view. My CCTV would often catch 'suspicious' looking cars going up the road, turn around and then slow down, also often untaxed and when I put the number plates into DVLA they came back unknown. One time a car actually stopped outside and the driver was pretending to be on the phone, so I went outside. As soon as I opened the front door he sped off.

Thankfully nothing ever happened, but as others have suggested, get a Disklok. Mine had one and I would make the presence known of our dog etc. It's a bit catch22 though, because you don't want to make it too difficult for them that they decide to break into your house, so whilst making the car look difficult to steal I would suggest you also somehow make your house hard to break into. They prey on routine, so try to make it hard for them to do things. I had 'timer lights' downstairs set to go on & off at various times when we were in bed etc. I also beefed up the light on the front of the house driveway with a really bright LED bulb that was also linked to a timer to switch on/off periodically. Little things, but I personally think it all adds up

When I rang the police, they said they were unable to do anything other than "send a patrol car around" later in the day to see if the car is still in the area...

Also, if you see any suspicious cars again, make it known that they've been clocked...
Stand at your window watching or something similar, obviously dont get into any confrontation or anything...
And as above, if you've got a dog, make it known.

On a lighter note...

What's the film where they take the undercover car some cups of coffee? And doughnuts? One of the Lethal Weapon films possibly? I recall that scene being in some 80s American / mafia action movie

PS.

Laminated front window films and disable obd would get move vote. But definitely move the car in the short term. If you are leaving it on the driveway, could also pop a fuse out, so it cannot be started.

I am pretty sure I have the Medium on my B8.5. I got it from Ebay new (dont be tempted with used, far too many with missing keys!). The deal came with the steering wheel protective cover and the carrying bag that velcros nicely onto the boot side. Mine is the silver version.

Can you advise on battery life? I like the idea but with my luck the day I forget to charge it is the day it gets stolen!

You need a 'Small' (35-39cm). Anything bigger can be wrenched off due to the FBSW.

I also have mine in Silver. At first it may feel like a bit of a pain, but once you are in a routine of using it, it becomes second nature.

Another vote here for the steering wheel cover. Whilst it may seem a bit pointless it really does protect the steering wheel from dents, marks etc, and a bit of a no brainer at a fiver.

It connects to the car battery (two wires) plus an optional ignition sense. I can share offline where I've attached mine. Easy to do.

It has an internal rechargeable battery so if the car battery is disconnected it will still work for 24 hours or more.

Others selling it for £150
