19k service, dealer quotes and rant.

My car is due an inspection service with the gearbox oil (front I think) as the mileage is 19k. So I contact the dealer and the conversation goes like this.
Me “Can you tell me the cost of the service?”
Lady “Its £173.25 for the gearbox work plus it needs an inspection service so total cost will be £408.45”
Me “would you be able to reduce that as I have been given a lesser figure from another dealer?”
3 mins later, Lady “Yes we can do it for £565.38”
I point out the obvious and she comes back with “Oh it needs an air filter which is £156.93 fitted”
So she then comes back with a final price of £540 which I agree to and get it booked in.
The conversation then gets onto brake pads and I ask for a quote to supply and fit which comes back at £457.32 at which point my jaw drops as just over a year ago I had the very same pads fitted to my RS5
At the very same dealer for half that! The lady asks if the RS5 was over three years old which it was and she then adds that they charge more for cars that are less than three years old!
I’m not sure if I am naive and this practice is commonplace but it felt very odd to me that you should be penalised for owning a car less than three years old! Are the increased prices effectively paying for the manufacturer’s warranty?
I then contact another Audi dealer via eBay and get a quote for supply only of the Pads, Discs and air filter delivered for £920! I’m pretty sure I can do the discs, pads and filter myself and am even more tempted to now!

Mine's having the two year inspection service tomorrow (17500 miles) so not doing the gearbox just yet). Audi didn't identify that it needs airfilters doing as part of the service so have only quoted me for the what I assume is the labour at about £250!
It's ridiculous that they want to charge more for pads when it's less than three yeards old. Was the ebay quote on pads & discs for front or rear?

But the pads and take to a local tyre / brake specialist. Mine charged me £60 to change discs and pad.

Ive read about the different labour charge on here before. Is it the case that thet reduce the labour rate to try and retain services for cars out of warranty? I imagine once the warranty expires a lot of people take their business to independent due to the extortionate main dealer labour charge so this sounds like a plan to try and retain some of that business outside of warranty.

The Air filter (2 sides) should be changed at 19k miles per the service schedule as should the gearbox oil or part of the gearbox's oil. They want £173.25 for the gearbox, £156.93 for the air filter which leaves £209.82 for the inspection. It had an oil change service back in August at 12k miles but that was my choice.
The Air filters are £28 each so they basically want £100 to unclip an airbox and drop a filter in!
The Pads are for the fronts and the Audi dealer I contacted via ebay wants £245 to supply.

Mine is up for its 2 year inspection service too - car also says it's an oil service, is that right? Bought the car 1 year old with a "fresh service".
Can someone help me with what is done in each ?
I'll call another garage on Monday to get a quote and then haggle with my usual one

Audi were quite vague with what is actually included in the inspection service when I took it in friday. I was told that they conduct a very thorough inspection but didn't want to change the pollen or air filters - no idea why! I asked them to them change the pollen filter and would have changed the air filters but have already swapped these out for K&Ns. Engine Oil was changed at 12000 so that didn't need doing but would be required at 19000 / 2 years if not already carried out. The gear box oil will also need changing at 19000 miles so will get that carried out along with the diff oils.
I'm sure Audi intended that I get most of these items dealt with as part of the inpsection service but mine came up slightly earlier than 2 years on the service indicator and before 19000 miles so just had the inspection carried out.

Okay so I finally got prices sorted and got a pretty good deal from Crewe Audi for supplying the parts. They charged me £245 for front pads, £552 for the front discs and £28 each for the air filters plus postage, total came to £898. I have mentioned that there may be a few on here that want bits so hopefully he will give us a good deal. Email

Just got my 19k service done at Oxford Audi. This was the scheduled service only and got charged £252 instead of the original £480 quoted as I supplied my own oil.
They wanted £19 plus VAT per litre. Got mine 3x4L bottles of the same Castrol for £96 quid from ECP.

Which oil did you get and do you know the quantity? I might get some in anticipation of my service.

Go onto Opie oils they are doing 9 litres of Castro edge for 70.50. That's more than half what the dealers will charge you for the same oil!!!

Comes up no match for the RS4 on Opie. As mentioned above I don't actually know what oil it needs, 5W etc etc. It never uses any and usually gets changed by the dealer.

The oil is 5W/30. Castrol edge.
Go to ECP and use voucher SALE30. Gets you a 4l bottle for 32.19 all in. Using my GCSE maths, that's a few pence over £8 a litre. Or 20 euros due to brexit.
