Exhausts!! It's time!! Which One :-)

Right; So I've a green light with Audi that an Exhaust is acceptable (from the workshop)

So here we go; my brief is that it needs to be quiet with kids in; and ridiculous when they are not in it - I think this is gonna be hard to find; but I wanted to seek your thoughts.

For me I've factored out the Milltek at this stage - why? well for me it's either too quiet; or it drones. That's based on a lot of opinions I have been hearing from people directly on; research on the net. and extensive youtube watching (granted you tube is a bit unreliable because my Apple Mac Speakers can;t do the job fully!)

So, I've got it into my head that a bit of dosh will have to be spent......... kmpowell - it's definitely a man mental spreadsheet.

The four choices on the shortlist are:

1. Akrapovic - I just can;t get away from these; I love the tailpipes - no X-Scetion (could I add one though?) but sound great; and well built. I also reckon will have decent RV when the car ever gets sold....

https://www.akrapovic.com/#!/car/produc ... earId=3857

2. Capristo - Great exhaust; I'm a bit confused by the box of tricks; but it does have an X-Section - I think similar in noise control to the Akra? (posting the RS5 link as the RS4 page is for the B7)

http://www.capristoexhaust.com/audi/rs- ... tem-detail

3. HMS - hmmm; again looks great - have been in email dialog with them - sounds well worried if too loud? the X-Pipe can be fitted to the existing exhaust so is a much cheaper way in but you have to cut the old exhaust; which render the re-sell of that when you sell the car.... not impossible but you'd have to weld it back together.

4. Armytrix - I've heard these things are too loud......

http://www.armytrix.com/Audi-RS5.php

As you can tell this is a world of pain - HELP; I've stuck a poll up to help....

Of course any other ideas - please discuss!!!!

Added JC Weld on too - exhaust is currently development; but GREAT rep!

I think you'd be silly to not even consider the JC Weldfab system. On the B7 it is simply the best exhaust I have heard. And one of the best built. And one of the cheapest when you consider the cost of cats (you could of course go cat back) and valves.
I'd imagine the B8 version would sound very similar, and I believe Ross is in talks with them about making one for him.

If I had a B8, this would be my first and only choice.

Or how about removing the resonators from the standard exhaust?

JC weld fab is the one I would go for,Neil's b7 is the best sounding exhaust I've heard to date

Right Mike and RIV; you see that's thrown many more cats out there.

Spoke to Mark at JC Weld this afternoon - he could neither confirm nor deny that RossDagley is going in tomorrow night :-) (It's a wild assumption that I'm making...)

So decent fellas; great rep; especially from some dudes on here that I really respect!

So that adds a developmental JCWeld too - I have updated the poll; Mark's gonna drop me a line after he's seen Ross's.

Do I hear the words group buy starting to form in my mind? who'd be up for that idea?

Have a listen to Neil or Nicks exhaust if you get a chance or I'm sure someone will post a video here soon. I know its a b7 but its pretty much the same engine. But it really needs to be heard in the flesh, the videos do not do it justice.

And you need to add the JC Weldfab to the voting options.

Milly sounds good that's it, check a weld fab exhaust out compared to the milly, the difference in quality is massive

In my honest opinion the Akropovic sounds like someone's put something in the exhaust tips to make it sound nice. Listening to the sports exhaust vs. their exhaust the Audi has by far the nicer more natural tone although the Akropovic does sound quite nice on the down changes. They all sound a little bit look at me rather like the Aston AMV8! My ideal would be the Audi exhaust with just a few more pops and gurgles when lifting off and maybe a touch louder.

That's an interesting point; and it makes me wonder if just the X-Pipe from HMS would be a good way to go?

You can fit that into the standard exhaust; with some welding though - which means that when you sell it to revert to standard requires some sleeves and welding; and therefore you run the risk on the exhaust not looking standard anymore

Nuff said.....
Just to add, when in quiet mode it is totally acceptable for kids etc. until you cruise above 85mph, then the flaps open. I have to say it doesn't bother me but I don't drive more than a 100 miles a week and it also keeps you within "legal" aka "non-ban" speeds on the m-way.

I drove it down to Switzerland and never went above 85mph and none of the lads complained about noise.

Ha, I'm more likely to get complaints of it being too quiet from my lad.

I've had to move my appointment with JC Weldfab to Thursday due to a diary cockup with the missus and me. BUT... having had the milltek on the B7, when I explained to those guys (JCFW) that I wanted 'deafen the neighbouring postcodes on valves open' and 'funeral procession quiet' when closed (something the milltek couldn't do) they didn't shy away from it. Like most people, I want loud and quiet - when I want it only though. Typical!

I'll let you know what they say on Thursday once they've seen it - I'm sure they'll be able to do something amazing, but for me on my car, I'm somewhat budget constrained right now due to house improvements so... I might not be the first unless they can do some magic on the cheap. We'll see :)
