Odd Noise on Cold Start

Having recently sold my B7 I've bought another B8. I'm hankering after a mate's Sepang R8 which he is looking to sell early in the summer, so the B8 is only likely to be with me for a few months. I bought the last B8 when the silly finance contribution deals were on but only owned it for 3 days before flipping it on for a decent profit.... I don't remember much about B8 ownership first time round!!

My recently purchased B8 makes an odd noise when it is started from cold in the morning. The best way of describing it is an odd metallic vibration / slight clatter which seems to be present it the exhaust. The noise is present for about 10 seconds. Dealer says its normal and waffled something about air being pumped into the cats to improve cold efficieny!!

What are you guys thoughts, anyone experienced similar??

I believe normal, modern engines deliberately run rich on start and a couple of valves open to let air into the exhaust manifold which allows the unburnt fuel to burn and heat the cats! My 335 sounds exactly the same. For about 15-20 seconds. Like rattle vibration.

Not strictly RS4, but essentially the same. Page 18

My old 1M used to do this, but at a much more aggressive level and a longer length of time (c30 seconds) than my RS does. It was like hell waking up when I started it up for the first time on cold! :D

They all seem to sound like a bag of nails for the first 15 seconds then make a nice induction noise and quieten down a bit.

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a 2013 RS4 and have noticed that when the weather is cold the car makes a terrible noise on cold start up. I have taken it to my local dealer where an engineer said this is normal on RS4 and RS5's. The noise lasts for around 30 seconds and then the car sounds normal. I have read a lot of other posts and threads about various causes and possible fixes but I want to know if this is anything to worry about. I still have a 1 year warranty but as the Audi Engineers seem to think this is normal I am not sure what to do. I recorded the sound the last time I started it and have attached to this post.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Scott

Thanks Andy, but what is the louder rasping noise you can hear when I rev the engine in the 1st three quarters of the clip? It sounds like the heat shield maybe as I had similar issue on a previous car but like I said in my original post the Audi Techs advised its normal. Does your car make this noise on a cold start??

Hey there Scott

Sounds fine to me also. All I would say is, revving the engine like that when it's cold isn't the best idea in the world. The V8 lump is quite highly tuned and the B7 was prone to coking. If you don't allow the engine warm sufficiently you're not going to help.

Out of interest, where are you based? If it really concerns you that much, seek a second opinion. If you're anywhere near London, then I would highly recommend the team at Jack Barclays in Wandsworth. I know there are many on here that take there cars there now because they offer such excellent service.
