What next?

Post by smudge » Thu Nov 06, 2014 9:44 pm

So, my car is now 2 years old & I am wondering what to do. I have scrubbed off a new B8 as the B9 is coming out next year & I understand from certain reliable sources that the RS4 will be launched earlier than normal in the life span. I don't want to loose a wedge on a new car. So my options:

M3 (though the lack of estate makes it an almost instant no)
Current RS4 + SC :D
C63+
RS6
E63

Or something boring as a daily driver & a mid/rear engined dd that sits in the garage until the sun shines or I want to go out to play.

Is anyone else having the same predicament?

I'd be tempted to see how the C63 performs, if it's as expected and were out right now it would probably get the nod for me over the RS4. I've gone past the stage of toys in the garage (for now) because I realised that I just didn't get my monies worth, but it took me about 20 years to get there so I wouldn't stop you. Other options I'd consider in your shoes would be the M5 (good deals available) or the Macan Turbo (<beep> deals available). As good as our SQ is, it is a bit too everyday and the platform is ageing with technology to match (as per B8).
2015 RS4 on the way
2014 SQ5

I had a race with a ML63 last week in an R8 V10 and there was very little in it. Hugely impressive for such a big beast
I'll be looking one of them up when the time comes in a couple of years to wave goodbye to my current RS4, and then wait for the B9 model to come out
Either that or an RS6 (might want to get my order in now judging by current dealer lead time performance :biggrin3: )
Not sure there's much else in the circa £60k market that really compares to an RS4 at the moment now that C63 is staying RWD only

Having just bought a 2 year old RS4 I also considered the C63. What put me off it was a) slightly dull looks compared to the RS4, b) although a fabulous engine also a very thirsty one (makes an RS4 positively frugal!) and c) wet weather/winter roads....

If I were in your position (which in a way I am) I would keep the RS4 and buy a proper classic drivers car like an air-cooled 911 (which I have :D ) and enjoy seeing its value rise rather than fall whilst having the best of both worlds!

So I guess my criteria is based around wanting an estate. Hence the M5 & M3 are off the list. The last C63 was something I also looked at, but before I even went for a drive, the internal space took it off my list. The RS4 is close to being too small for my eldest, but she'll be driving this time next year, so possibly become less of an issue.

Yesterday I saw an E63 estate & it had presence, plus Evo rate it over the RS6 in the latest issue, but I think the RS ticks more boxes for me. I just wonder if it's going to be too big for London as a daily driver. Hence I wonder if I should stick with what I've got for 2-3 years & stick a supercharger on it.

Yep pretty much Ian, the 'Lemon' R32 was a 52 plater, seems like a long long time ago now!! May explain the grey hairs creeping in.

The lemon? I seem to remember you had a blue one and a black one, I cannot remember which was which, the second replaced the first 'lemon' then? My memory isn't what it was haha. I don't have grey hair because I don't have hardly any hair left!

Still live locally, and almost bought a wreck of a house in Palmerston Street in the summer, ended up buying a house to do up in Goldington / Putnoe instead

Just an opinion from a newbie....

I'm only 8 weeks into a new RS4 and it's great. However the RS6 would be a considered choice. I test drove the RS4, RS6, E63, C63 back to back over a weekend.

The RS4, felt the right size for the moment (my small person is 6) but the RS6 will go on order in about 12 months as said small person grows, and for me it was top of the tree for everyday use with decent space. It felt bigger than the RS4 on the road, but more refined, updated and actually an easier drive but more mental when it was time to push on.

The E63 felt a lot bigger...but more refined as a cruiser. And the C63 whilst sounded bloody brilliant it in some ways didn't feel special enough or look special enough.

All rounder, city, country, wet, dry was the RS6. Although you may need to find a slightly bigger parking space.

The other positive was the Mrs was a little bit further away in the RS6 compared to the RS4....so I couldnt hear her telling me to slow down as easily :bigblink:
