Dyno figures

Post by smudge » Tue Aug 26, 2014 1:47 am

Ok, so on Sunday I was up north & popped into an open day being held at Shark Performance. They have a 4wd rr, so for £60 (all of which went to charity) so I got the RS dyno'd.

Anyway, point of my post / the thread.... If you've had your car dyno'd, place the details on here to see how we're all doing....

I wasn't particularly enamoured with mine, but then I wasn't surprised either.

409.6bhp was the result. I do have a full chart plotting all the figures, so I'll load that on here tomorrow.

It's all torque talk.

It's still mechanical on the RS4, so no Haldex system.

I'm guessing this was at the wheels and not the flywheel which would account for the 10% loss.

I'd like to bet that the b8 suffers pretty much the same drop in bhp as the cars get some miles under their belt.

I have nothing to contribute in terms of explanation, just adding more questions. That said, APR - reputable as they are - show same power figure as Audi quoted figure (on 93 Octane).
So how, in simple terms, how can there be so much variation in different owner figures - the lower figures I mean? …Environment temp and atmospheric pressure conditions?, engine build variation?, engine mileage / carbon deposit?, dyne maker / calibration?, other?

General consensus is that it’s lower for the RS4 than advertised by Audi??

it's very easy to change the data by something very trivial.
the choice of tyre, it's wear and even pressure can really upset a dyno.
the wear n tear will impact things - you will get slightly different results to a car that's spent 10k on a motorway to 10k driving around town.

Another "trick" some unscrupulous tuners use is to simply reset the ecu and wipe out the long term fuel trim adaptions. This generally puts the car on a much more aggressive setting and it then backs off depending on the fuel being used.

The only accurate way to do it is to take the engine out and bench test it.

Thx. Had not read that before - tire condition, past engine usage style, …. interesting.

Curious also, but although fuel octane level are supposed to be according to global rating / standards, is it accepted that (high octane) fuels vary slightly from brand to brand, country to country …and so possibly ‘also’ this impact ‘a little’ on engine performance?

That being said, unlike the supercharged 3.0litre on B8 S4 which typically dyno’s at higher values than quoted by OEM, there’s no chance of that on the RS4, right?:-) From various reports / posts shared it seems to dyne at lower values than quoted by OEM - not a big deal, but does irks a little when you find something is ‘not exactly as advertised’ :bash:

It's also worth noting that different RR operators will have different assumptions for drivetrain loss between wheels and fly
Only way to gauge improvement consistently is to use the same rr and calculation methods
