understeer
Hello
I have a May 2014 RS4 and now up to about 1,500 miles.
I am finding the understeer really annoying. ..In comfort the front end has rubbish turn in and dynamic is just too harsh as a ride and the dynamic steering is too heavy.
Spoke to Audi and they have no comment...has anyone managed to get decent settings to remove the understeer?
Also can't seem to get rear end to come out at all...was told to stick diff in comfort and this would help but not seen much evidence of this!
My comments on car...perfect for family duties and missus likes driving it, makes a nice noise, well built and looks great and when it goes the way the revs build reminds me of a Ferrari screaming! Flappy paddles too small to be any use.
What would make it better? Turn in front end improved and rear that plays more and better flappy paddles and better weight to steering.
Only see two other b8 rs4's on road since I had it and a fair few new RS6 ' s which look massive!
Was offered an m4 for delivery next week but the better residuals and noise of the rs4 has kept me loyal for now.
has anyone else had issues with the understeer and steering?

Issue with every bmw m is the depreciation after a few months... £70k m4 will be £45k in a few months.HYFR wrote:I'd go M4
With my GTR's and 911 ' s the dealers have had say three different geo settings for each car to set up as the owner wants...surprises me that Audi do not offer this on RS models.

Re: understeer
Was reading the final report on the rs4 long termer in autocar recently where the journo said he felt his last long term car a M135i was more fun with less power and £20k cheaper than the rs4...I have more fun taking our 116i m sport round a roundabout than the rs4...back end does not move there but more the way the front end is tight in to and you can feel what the car is doing and how it is responding. ..The rs4 just feels wooden and dare I say dull.
Love the way it looks but just not connecting!
Does anyone else feel similar?

Re: understeer
Should have bought a B7 if you wanted an RS 4 that handled well and was fun.

It's a decent chassis just set up badly from factory or rather good for autobahn but rubbish for drivers.HYFR wrote:Should have bought a B7 if you wanted an RS 4 that handled well and was fun.
Off to see M4 this afternoon and have Litchfield's who looked after my GTR's looking at geo set up

...you'd also not buy a car with Quattro for tail out action. It will do it if heavily provoked. But that's not going to end well at the local roundabout.
Re: understeer
I hate to say it, but I agree with most of your comments.
I hate dynamic steering-it does feel wooden. The B8 is a better car in every way compared to the B7, (IMHO which I really connected with over my 3 year period of ownership.
I'd like to drive a b8 without dynamic steering and see if the servo tronic system which was on the b7 , which is standard on the b8, (unless you go for the sport pack) makes the difference.
I bought my b8 new with the intention of keeping it forever. The somewhat dull feel is making me re consider.
I've even done the sums on selling my current one and making a factory order for a new one without dynamic steering, but the cost is prohibitive-lower Audi contribution now, increased car RRP and extortionate cost of 20" wheels and sports exhaust when not purchased as part of the sports pack.

I don't want to be doing m3 slides...With the GTR and my 911 Turbo and GT2 the back would move slightly before the TC kicked in...feels fun and is relatively safe...ie the car catches it before it goes massively sideways and does at low speeds.doodlebug wrote:...you'd also not buy a car with Quattro for tail out action. Has the new bridgestones. ..they seem to have a sort of toyo track tyre profile and perhaps need masses of heat to get to stick and control front end?bam_bam wrote:Tryes?

All the journos have said in reviews that a non dynamic car is a better carWarthog wrote:I hate to say it, but I agree with most of your comments.

The only reason RS models would have held their value better in the past would have been the limited production runs, one model at a time rule (C5 vs E39 was a good example). Now they're being built all the time, the B8 is available with a fairly big discount and finance contributions, unless it's like the exclusive Riveria Blue one, who else is buying second hand B8 RS 4's? The M4 will hold it's value much better, and from what you've described, be a much more appropriate car for you're after.

Watch this Top Gear RS 5 vs E92 M3 test. It's exactly what you're describing, the newer M car will be better still.

Re: understeer
If you want a sharper turn in the it's all front end stuff.
Change of tyres is a good starting point maybe add some toe out.
