Front Tyre Wear
Hi All,
I have just swapped (oem p zeros) tyres and wheels front to rear and vice verca after 9k miles to try and even out the tyre wear as the fronts had more wear than the rears on my 2013 B8 RS4. While doing this I noted that the front passengers tyre was noticeably more worn than the drivers front which is consistent with the vibration I get when doing a tight right turn or u turn (tyre scrubbing?) and was curious to know if this is normal for the B8? This is my first Audi and first RS but I have driven quite a few 4wd SUVs such as SQ5, RR Sport, RR Vogue and ML 63 and never noticed anything like it before.
Anyone care to enlighten me as to why this may be happening?
As an aside, once the tyre rotation was complete I went for a drive and the tyre pressure monitoring warning came up as soon as my speed exceeded 50mph. I stopped and checked pressures which were all ok then reset it and have had no problems since. Thoughts anyone?
Cheers

Re: Front Tyre Wear
Just a guess but you take roundabouts too fast??

Re: Front Tyre Wear
This!! My near side front tyre's always got worn out quicker from chucking the car into a bend at speedJust a guess but you take roundabouts too fast??

Re: Front Tyre Wear

Re: Front Tyre Wear
I don't think that I have been cornering too hard, but I guess that may be open for debate. I can howeve feel the left front tyre scrubbing during u-turns and tight right handers so felt that was probably when the wear occurs.
Does anyone get the same vibration etc on tight turns?
If it's a fact of life that's fine, I just want to find out if it's normal or not.
Thanks.

Re: Front Tyre Wear
You'll often get what feels like 'diff roll' on near full lock
This always seemed more prominent on worn or under inflated tyres than new
My last b7 was terrible for it, but it was still noticeable on my b8 and the rs5 I have currently is bad for it too
I never noticed front tyre wear specifically though and always seemed to wear them pretty evenly
Is it possibly you've knocked it out of alignment at any point at all ?

Re: Front Tyre Wear
I do live in earthquake ravaged Christchurch, NZ and our roads really are bad but I have been VERY careful (bordering on obsessive of you ask my wife) not to hit potholes etc and curbs. Also, I have just rotated the wheels and this has made no difference so I don't think this is the problem, also there is no vibration or 'pulling' when driving at any speed.
Maybe the is just the way it's meant to be?

Graeme, can you elaborate on this statement? "You'll often get what feels like 'diff roll' on near full lock"

Re: Front Tyre Wear
It's not an easy sensation to try and describe without various arm movements and noises, but basically it feels as if, when you're turning on full or near full lock, that you hit a golfball sized object that rolls with the wheel meaning you're not getting the full turning angle that your wheel position would suggest. It feels like a subtle 'thump thump thump thump'nwk00 wrote:Graeme, can you elaborate on this statement? "You'll often get what feels like 'diff roll' on near full lock"
When the front diff completely failed on my b7 it was like driving over cricket balls and made the whole car judder, but golf balls are normal (ish)
Ie, the outer wheel is dragging
Does that make sense ?

Re: Front Tyre Wear
It is quite common if you have full lock and put power down hard from standstill, a rumble I am guessing is the diff struggling with power+inside wheel stationary and outside doing all the work. My 4motion golf did it, my S6 did it, my mk6 golf gti did it and so does the RS4. Never worried about it. If they all do it it is generally a "feature" not a "fault"

My example wasn't under any sort of power. More parking speeds

Re: Front Tyre Wear
Mine did that to at parking speeds but only when the tyres got worn down below about 3mm.Graeme4130 wrote:My example wasn't under any sort of power. More parking speeds

Re: Front Tyre Wear
Thanks I think so. I think mine does it too.
Never tested full lock turn at high speed though

Standing start+full lock+full throttle = big smokey donut or a violent head to windscreen moment as traction/stability controls stops the funnwk00 wrote:Thanks I think so. I think mine does it too.

Re: Front Tyre Wear
Each sensor in the wheel is communication with it's nearest aerial. If you swap the wheels over it will not be able to communicate with the sensor it did previously and this will throw up an error after a few minutes. You can either reset the pressures (like you did) or just keep driving and it will soon realise that the wheels have been changed and then correctly communicate with the nearest sensor. At least that is what happens on the B7, I imagine the B8 is probably the same.1199Panigale wrote:
