iPhone and phone prep high

Morning all,

I have my new RS4 now and also an iPhone 5.

I always thought that because the iPhone doesn't have the sim access profile the only way to make the Audi connect work was to have a separate SIM card in the car and then pop it out when you want to make a call over Bluetooth connection to the iPhone.

However today I put my GiffGaff sim (unlimited data for £12 a month) in the car.

It then asked me which one I wanted to use for phone calls, so I said the iPhone. Now I have two little phone icons showing signal strength at the bottom right of the MMI, phone calls go via iPhone and when my sim is activated by GiffGaff I think data goes via that.

From looking on forums it had looked like this was impossible, have they done an update or will it not actually work?

Thanks.

You sir are a legend, thank you for this info.

FYI you can get unlimited data for £20 for 6 months with T-Mobile.

This was indeed the holy grail of iPhone and Audi Phone prep high.

I am now waiting for sodding GiffGaff to activate the SIM so I can make sure the data works whilst the phone calls are routed to the iPhone.

Will have a look at that t-mobile that looks like a great deal!

Here is a shot of the MMI with the two phone connections, see bottom right. Am I making a to good to be true newbie mistake here?

OK so the SIM is now activated and it all works.

Calls over the iPhone, AudiConnect googlemaps and traffic over the SIM in the dashboard, without having to insert/remove the SIM.

In other words convenient.

Would be better if it could use on line stuff over the iPhone data to save me £12 a month but given the price of the car it is a rounding error!

T-Mobile Internet online chat.....

You are now connected with Spencer.

Spencer: Hi there, my name is Spencer. I am part of the dedicated T-Mobile Online Sales Team. How can I help you with your new order?

Cal: Hello. Can I order a SIM for data use only and pay the £20 for 6 months unlimited internet (6 month internet sim booster) or do I also have to pay a monthly rental?

Spencer: Hi Cal.

Spencer: Are you looking for pay as you go or pay monthly sim deal?

Cal: I don't mind, I am looking for a SIM I will use for data and if it is 6 months unlimited data for £20 I will buy it

Spencer: So are you looking for pay as you go booster for 6 months Internet.

Spencer: But you will not get Unlimited data on that booster.

Spencer: you can go for the pay monthly sim contract./

Cal: It just says "6 months internet", how much data is that?

Spencer: Cal, I can offer you a sim free of cost for a monthly spend of £21 a month on 12 months contract. In which you get 2000 minutes anytime any network ( Mobile and Land Line ) + Unlimited texts & Internet.

Spencer: How does this deal sound to you?

Spencer: You will only get 500 Internet

Cal: Thanks but I have better from giffgaff for £12. Have a nice day thanks for the help

Well, he sounds useless, but I can assure you that you can do it.

Also the car wont use anywhere near 500meg a month.

I suspect "Spencer" may not have passed a Turing Test ;-)

Please let us know if you do end up with a SIM with no monthly costs and just £20 for 6 months data use, I will certainly terminate the giffgaff one if that is the case.

I'm confused!!!

I'm going to reset my HU tomorrow & start it all over again & see if I can achieve the same. I have my iPhone5 & an o2 data only Sim in the dash, but I currently have to remove the sim to allow Handsfree on the iPhone. Knowing me, I simply pressed all the buttons without fully reading what was being asked, it would be the first time! Fingers crossed its just user error.
