The B7 was a limited run? That's a pretty relaxed limit compared to previous RSes...

yep the runs seem to be getting bigger RS2 about 197 B5 RS4 400 and B7 RS4 god knows but hopefully the handling will be as good if not better than the currant RS4 the engine it would be nice for th 4.0 V8T but lets see i know i will probably get one whe there released as ther is nothing out there that comes close to all year round performace now if merc did th C63 4 wheel drive i would consider jumping ship but as a back road terroist the RS4 is hard to beat

I wonder if they'll stick a seven speed manual in it like the new 991.

Haha, thats all PR! The B7 RS4 was ready way before it went on sale March 2006 - previewed at the 25th anniversary of Quattro in Feb 2005 just after the facelifted B7 A4 had gone on sale. The hard work was already done - fitting the 4.2 V8 into the B6 including camchains for the S4 etc.

Costs wise, the A4 and A5 share a floorpan of course to which the 450 bhp RS5 4163 NA V8 has already been fitted - as has DSG.

Axing the RS4 this late just doesn't make sense?! The only reason I can think is Audi simply don't want the uneconomical old school 4.2 V8 in the RS4 in these days of recession, carbon emissions and fuel economy. The much more economical new twin turbo 4.0 V8 may not fit - Mercedes just launched the C klasse coupe with the old NA 6.2 V8 because of the new twin turbo 5.5 V8 simply won't fit in the engine bay.
