Couple that with the fact you're travelling to buy the car, then the dealer can't even up sell servicing or subsequent warranty work, so for these guys, you're not an earner for them had that's all they're really interested in
This. 100%.
The harsh reality is that once all the discounts are taken into consideration they are left with c0.5-1% profit (my dealer made 0.5%, which he showed me the paperwork for because I didn't quite believe him), on a car they won't see again to service. The only thing he can hope for is I go back to him to trade in when my PCP ends in 2yrs time. With that in mind it goes back to the original point I made of being in the right place at the right time and you have to take the emotion out of it.
For example, the dealer I bought mine from had the car close to the point where if it wasn't sold they lost their 'new stock sales' target bonus on it, which also meant they would have had to register it as a demo, which is a lose lose for them. On top of that it was end of year in the quietest week where sales had been slow. All that meant he was willing to do a deal to hit targets. But even then, that was only after I pushed and pushed and pushed over a period of a few days.
FWIW my experience was that all the dealers I contacted across the country rang me back, even if it was to say they couldn't/wouldn't match.
