I think there's a bit of an overreaction here. Mine is on the drive all week or in a car park. To be fair, if someone wants to steal it, they will.

My security measures are locked doors and no spare keys in the house.

I pays the insurance, and if it's nicked, I'll claim.

I don't agree with that logic. Yes, that's what insurance is for, but if the car is nicked and recovered a short time later, the insurance will only pay the costs to repair any damage, and you will get the car back knowing that some low life scum has (possibly) thrashed the car to an inch of its life. Plus it's a claim on your policy. If it's never recovered then you should get your money, possibly the invoice figure if you have GAP insurance but as they aren't in production anymore, finding a like replacement may be difficult.
Plus there's the issue that if they break into your house, you have that thought to live with and the families safety to bear in mind.
I think I would rather take whatever preventative precautions that I can, without going overboard, and hopefully keep my pride and joy in my possession.

Regardless of safety and security that you install, if someone wants to steal it, they're gonna steal it.

I haven't had an issue. And hope not to, but if someone wants to, then there's not much I'll be able to do about it.

So, put keys in a safe, someone comes in to your house and gets them anyway. Park the car in a car park, someone sees it and waits for you, gets it anyway. Doesn't make it right, but that's a risk with cars.

I agree, I don't want the car back if it gets nicked...but nothing I can do about that.

As for replacement, it's a car I'd look to replace it because I like it, but wouldn't lose sleep if I couldn't. In the end, it is just a car...insurance is there to be claimed against (when appropriate).

As you say, it's about weighing up the risks, assessing the likelihood, appropriately mitigating them (insurance is a mitigation) and decide if you can live with that...everyone will have different levels, mine are as I say:

Don't make it easy, but enjoy the car and don't put me or the family at risk for it, as at the end of the day, it's just metal...

My car got nicked, got half its value from the insurance and it took a solicitor, ombudsman and 8months of stress to get half its value. Protect your property the best you can! No one will help you or do you any favours, especially insurance. Their job is to take your money and minimise any payout, there very good at that.

That's the type of thing that is worrying... I've had a different experience with insurance companies though.

In 2 write-offs, I've had 1 pay out 500 less than I paid, 6 months after I got the car. I thought it was a fair deal. And the other paid out much more than I paid thanks to like for like replacements/car availability.

Would you mind sharing what caused the difference in value and who the insurer was? Would help any of us falling foul of this...
