Knocking suspension when cold

Post by AMB » Sun Jan 05, 2014 7:59 pm

Mine used to on occasion; it would be less severe if I put it in Dynamic.
Car went into stealer for nothing special and when got it back, hey presto - no knock! DRC fettle? I'm not entirely sure....

Had same problem with mine at 2500 miles. Just been back to Audi and first they performed a software update...didn't work. Then they replaced the o/s/f shock. Seems better, but still not convinced it is fully fixed...maybe something i'll have to live with?

If all RS4's knocked, then it's reasonable to assume its 'the norm'
However, several don't, mine included, so it must be a fault. Throw it back at the dealer, tell them how dusgusted you are, and make them fix it

Thought I would give a bit of insight,

Mine knocked from the day I picked it up, it took Audi 4 weeks to identify the fault and apparently repair it. I know they did a lot of diagnosis for Audi UK on my car as all the tech updates and advice from Audi UK did not fix the fault. They now have said that central valve for the DRC had failed, hence why the pressure kept dropping.
I just picked it up again on Friday although it is better but I'm still getting a metallic bang from the drivers front on the larger bumps.

Its going back in again, I'll let you know the outcome..

My 2011 RS5 has the same noise - tends to be more so going over bumps rather than through holes if that makes sense..

It doesn't seem to happen when in Dynamic setting, mainly just in Comfort mode.

Manchester Audi have advised they think it needs re-gassing although their machine is broken and they don't know when it will be fixed... They have referred me to Warrington Audi who have booked it in for Friday the 14th. They say they need the car for a full day of diagnostics and to try to re-gas...

Once I get it back I'll give an update.

To be honest I haven't had the car long and it has only recently started. I plan to put either H&R springs or KW coilovers on it soon but want to ensure all dampers & DRC system is 100% right while under warranty before I start meddling with it as we all know they'll wash their hands of it as soon as they get a sniff of any after market parts...

Hey guys, any updates on this? I took mine into the dealers back in Oct (I have DRC & 20's) & they couldn't find anything specific. My Master Tech is a good guy, he calls me personally & chats through all sorts of things, but this he could diagnose at the time, but he tells me he hasn't given up....... There are a couple of things that I want looking at so I'll get mine booked in, but if anyone else has been advised of a valve failure, or something else, I'd be keen to here.

Hi
I just thought I would feed some info back
Hull Audi have re charged the DRC and it's still the same
Andy @ autotechnica had a friend at audi HQ and there are aware of the issue but the information being fed to the dealers is the noise is a quirk in the suspension and no real fault !!
Mine will keep going back until they fix it, how can the B8 have a knock and the B7 be mint !!!

I've also posted a similar issue in the RS5 section under 'DRC knocking'

I have an ongoing issue with knocking from front suspension - the car has just come back to me after 2 weeks at Manchester Audi and the problem is still there. They're as baffled as I am as they have now replaced the following:

O/S/F shock, O/S/F lower rear wishbone, O/S/F top mount, both actuators and recharged the system.

Now no one seems sure what the problem could be so have asked me to bring it back again tomorrow (for the 3rd time...)

I have also noticed that the N/S is now higher than the O/S - I can get 3 fingers between wheel and arch on N/S and only 2 on O/S since its come back to me which I've asked them to look in to further...

They are insisting the best they can give me as a courtesy car is an A4 2.0 TDi which I grumbled about last time so have asked them to take it up with Audi UK to give me a more suitable loan car when it goes back in.

Starting to get a bit frustrated now..

Ive done 600 miles in mine over the last fortnight and its done it from day one.

It sounds like its coming from the rear.
It is worse when cold.
It seems to be worse in comfort than dynamic.
I can't tell if its when the shock is compressed or during extension.

As a side note, i find the dynamic setting for the suspension makes the ride so rough that I can't imagine when i would ever use it.
Is that everyone else's experience or is that part of the problem I have?

I use my car in dynamic 90% of the time, mine makes a slight noise in comfort from the front offside, it's doesn't worry me as the car handles well, I will get them to check the pressures when it gets serviced

Mine makes noise when cold but seems to handle fine so I am not bothered.
