Have you heard an Audi alarm?
Mine went off right outside and the first thing I said was "is that my phone?".

Yeah its pathetic. Stood talking with an RS4 owner at Audis in the Park, they shut the bonnet and the alarm went off as the car was locked, however it was so quiet they didn't even realise!

Is alarm volume adjustable via VCDS?

Why should they be bothered about the alarm?

Audi "alarms" are ridiculously quiet which just adds to the problem that nobody takes any notice of car alarms anyway.

When the alarm went off on my A4 in 2004 it was so quiet, despite the car being on the drive right outside the front door, it wasn't even as loud as the microwave beeping in the kitchen.

I posted over on the B7 Forum, but if I owned a Keyless Gone Audi I would have an immobiliser with RFID tag spliced into the ODB wires so you had to present the tag for the connections to the ODB port to be made.

I'm still sceptical about the idea of this being a targetted crime, rather than an inside job of some description.
How, for example, would the thief/thieves have known this is a keyless go car without the dealer instructing them ? I believe KG cars are visually identical to non KG cars, even in that they still have the key dock in the dash

err don't keyless cars have some sort of button on the door handles - my old man's B8 A4 does - easy to spot when you know what to look for?

This is scandalous - whether or not an inside job - that it can be done at all let alone in 12 minutes. There must be a way of making the OBD port inactive...

Simple one would be to position the port on the end of the dash facing the door so you cannot plug in unless the door is open. Think of the old school fuse boards - you take the passenger end cap off the dash - you cannot do this with the door shut. Audi could implement this change relatively easily on the production line.

Great idea - probably thwarted by the requirement that the port must be located in the passenger compartment within reach of the driver's seat although it would not prevent the technician using the port from the drivers seat & I can't see the EU getting too angsty as the directive is really to reduce emissions so I think the passenger requirement (+ can't need tools to get to it) is just meant to make mechanic's lives a bit easier. It can already have a cover so it could have some trim over it so wouldn't have to see it each time you opened the door.

Yeah, I agree. it'd certainly stop them accessing the port with a deadlocked door.
However, implementing it in production is not an easy job as you'd need to retool quite a few plastic mouldings, and that's before you start to look at any interference with cross members and airbag systems.

You could design it with the ODB recessed deep enough that you could plug in and then close the door - hence you could drive the car plugged in

Or have a cap like aforementioned fuse cover that can only be removed to access the ODB when the door is open. Again you could close the door and drive the car with it plugged in

So not all RS4s are keyless, live and learn.

To access live data you need the OBD scanner plugged in and the door shut.
TBH footwell isn't ideal but this seems to be the norm now on VAG
The best place for it is as on Mk4 Golf, just above centre console in dash smack in middle for easy access from either seat and no cables close to pedals/steering wheel.

However even better would be in a centre console storage bin like on a 911 (996 or 997) which locks with the central locking.

Soon I am sure OBD will be wireless and cars will come with a PIN which will be even more insecure!

Any B8 owner got VCDS? Can you turn ignition off, plug cable in and see if you can access modules such as Central Electrics, Central Locking etc
I am wondering it it stays live for a certain time period.
I coded a remote control for a Mk6 Golf today, realised I'd taken key out of the ignition to press the button on it but VCDS was still communicating with the car.

Is it possible to fit a battery master switch with a relay and a secondary battery (say a 6amp small thing) so when you exit the car you can flip the switch - which disconnects the main battery but keeps the back up battery in line for things like clocks, tracker etc? This way if someone tried to start the car the small battery would not ever have enough power to crank the starter motor?
Either that or fit a master switch to the start motor solenoid!?!
