Nipper, posts like yours should not be allowed. All I've been thinking about is whether I can afford a bloody RS4 now. Doh!
Lots of rubbish cars slowly progressing to a nice shiny S4

Ads, Even if you only add 4.5k the payments jump up to approximately £740 a month.

You want at least 6-8k of options to make it a decent car, so those payments soon jump up

True but my comment was more based on the minimum 10k options thinking.
May be true for some but and granted if I were to order I would probably float about 6k but that's personal preference - there's nothing certainly that is a must have.

£600/700 a month isn't that bad, it's just the final payment of 28k which is expensive, as I'd want to still keep the car!

It's easy to build the numbers up. For starters, what i'd consider to be essential ;

Non Ibis paint, sports pack, buckets, advanced nav, black pack, sunroof & b&o
That's 7 or 8K before before you start adding bits like park assist and advanced key
Very easy to make up £10k plus, especially if you're thinking of ceramics or anything even approaching custom paint/leather

I estimate with the correct spec you would be around £800 a month.

Surely that just depends on your deposit. I'm paying £400 per month over 4 years, £62,500 car. £15k down. I only do 5k miles a year so with a £26k balloon I should not lose all my deposit.

But that's my point - I do think there's a base spec that you need for most cars. For example any car costing 50k without sat nav is a resale disaster.
But to say a sunroof is essential is more a personal choice than any decision based on future resale.
Tbh given that sat nav is standard and buckets are an (expensive) cost option I can see te norm being pretty basic in terms of options.

Now the rs6... Bonkers - mine personal spec had 22k options!

For me, personally, sunroof and buckets were essential.
However, I can fully understand why for many they'd not be
I think come resale time, sports pack will be essential and possibly hdd nav/ b&o as standard nav and speakers are pretty pants

Most people are likely to have a decent deposit, even if it's just as I did - a B7 and a few quid down

I'm at a loss to understand how PCP actually works to the purchasers benefit. I hope someone can explain.

For example if the car costs £30k, you put a deposit of £10k down and owe £20
A 5 yr loan on 20k costs £400/month, so over 5 yrs/60 payments costs you 60x400=£24000
If you take a 3yr PCP, you pay for 36 months £400, but have a balance of 24x400 left to pay as your balloon.

But if I understand correctly its even worse- on a 5 yr bank loan, your £20k bank loan is being paid off from day 1. But on a PCP, as you never intend to pay off the full 20k, you'll be charged interest on the balloon all the way from day 1 to the end of the three year period.

I don't get it, can someone enlighten me?

Monthly payments are way cheaper on pcp.

Assume you want to sell the car after five years.
With HP or bank loan you have to pay off the whole amount and then sell the car.
With PCP you only finance the bit you use (plus interest on the balloon) which is way cheaper.
Usually the balloon is set under what the car will actually be worth so you can end up reciving some cash back if you can find a buyer at the end of the term.

It's similar to comparing interes only mortgages and capital repayment. You can afford a much more expensive house on interest only and it works fine if you intend to sell but obviously long term it costs more.

Well explained - I never really got it too & couldn't understand how my friends were all rolling round in flash cars, but basically with PCP you are just financing the depreciation each month which makes your monthly payment less than a bank loan.

The way I would look at it is really you need a 5 year loan not 3 - 3 years PCP then 2 years to pay the balance off if you want to own the car rather than start a new scheme so you are effectivley "leasing" the car.

this.

cars are a machine. you use them.
so i'd much rather pay for that use, rather than the whole car. interest cost is the premium you pay for that please.
he beauty of such arrangements is you can PCP a car up to 4yrs old.
PCP a 3yr R8 and they dont depreciate, so all you are paying is Interest.
PCP a brand new RS 4 and you are paying depreciation + Interest

ergo, cost to run a 3yr old R8 V10 on PCP or brand new RS 4 on PCP is more or less the same, if not cheaper for the R8 V10.
