How many gearbox fluids to change in this godforsaken car?!

Post by Bendelaurence » Mon Jun 12, 2023 3:30 pm

😆 Hi Guys,

Can someone tell me if I'm missing anything off this gearbox and diffs fluid change list please.

There are 4 fluids to change right?

1. Gearbox - Gear oil - AKA Front Final Drive: renew gearbox oil – Every 20,000 miles
2. Gearbox - ATF fluid and filter - AKA Dual Clutch Gearbox S-Tronic: Replace ATF filter and ATF fluid – Every 40,000 miles
3. Rear Diff - Gear oil - AKA Rear Final Drive : Replace final drive oil – Every 40,000 miles.
4. Rear Diff - ATF Fluid

Is that all of them or am I missing something

While we're here, since rosstech and OBD11 dont have the rear Diff air purge function, and anyone confirm that this method (at the end of the vid) works?

Double check with them exactly what they're doing mate. That sounds way too cheap, and ive seen main dealers quoting for half a job or completely wrong job on more than one RS forum.

I'm willing to bet £450 is ATF front and back. No MTF.

ELSA has no mention of changing the ATF filter on the gearbox side. Some garages do, some dont, I would. And some garages want t remove the sump, replace the gasket and inspect the sump.

To put it in perspective front ATF + filter + gasket + new crush seals = approx £700 at specialist

I'm personally not taking the sump off if ELSA doesn't reccomend. Does anyone know of a reason why this should be done

I just had mine done at 38k.. cost was £685.00 and that was a highly regarded Audi Specialist in Glasgow. Never checked with Glasgow Audi, but I'm guessing they would be more expensive..

Edit: Pollen filter was done too...

Yea, Im certain it was. I can check the invoice later.

Don't think they took anything apart.. just drain and refill... I'm thinking now, should they have dropped that sump and replaced the filter and gasket? I'm pretty sure they never done that. I was under car with the tech for a brief second as I had dropped in a pair of K and N Air filters for them to install for me which they done FOC...

Edit: Hadn't finalised my comments before posting.

Whilst under the vehicle, I meant to add he briefly took me through what he was doing as in fluids front diff, rear diff and box, 4 sections all told I beleive... no mention of dropping the pan and swapping out a filter of any sort.

This is what I’m trying to work out. ELSA dosent mention anything about sump gasket or atf filter when changing any of the 4 fluids. Yet I’ve seen many people list it in their parts list for the job. I don’t want to half ass it, but can’t see why I would need to take the sump off….

If you find any info please let me know mate. I’m still buying parts and tools so probs won’t get to work on it for a couple of weeks until work quietens down.

So far the list is 4 fuilds and Elsa says replace all for sealing plugs although I will just replace the crush washers if they’re not one piece plugs

How you liking the k and n filters Stuart?

I replaced the front final drive oil on Friday...old stuff looked like coffee coming out! Can see why the intervals are every 20k

Stu, I re checked ELSA. Under strict maintenance, the gear box section definitely requires sump removal. Hence the service kit for it contains a sump gasket and strainer, as well as fluids and external atf filter. It also states renew sump bolts and all sealing plugs on both diff and gear box.

I just need to get bolts and plugs from Audi today. Apparently a lot of bolts etc are coated to avoids mixed material corrosion, so I’m going to grab some originals.

I’m going to writing the whole thing up, with part numbers once I’m done because there seems to be alot of co fusion on the topic.

Some people don’t even bleed the diff after!! On a £9k dif! Madness!

Nope i had already had history of the dsg gearbox being done 15k ago so ive got a while get. (interestingly 3 plugs, a seal ring and a filter are listed on the invoice)

it was just front transmission box/diff and rear diff both sides.

I'd guess 3 drain plugs (2 - diff, 1 - tranny). They probs reused the fill plugs as not so critical. Filter and seal ring is external atf filter

Just waiting on one more fluid and a doge ODIS interface and im good to go lol :nogarors4:

Howdy vish, yea, they are bang on. I can't say I've noticed any performance change, though there must be of sorts, both OE were absolutely filthy, the K and Ns being brand new and a different material surely allows the car to gulp as much as it wants/needs.

Yea, strict adherence to service schedule is crucial on these, I done an interim change a couple of months ago, the car wasn't due an engine oil change for some time, well worth the cost of the parts, simply for piece of mind..

Easiest air filters to change, too. Like 10 mins a side including cleaning out the air boxes etc...

Noted !... I'll ask A for Audi next time I'm in.. dependant on answers I might run till next fluids are due then get filter done then.. or it may very well gnaw away at me and I'll fire it back in to get filter done...fresh oil again tho Image
