MMI Oil Level

Post by Iain_S4 » Thu Dec 18, 2014 5:40 pm

How trusting are people of the MMI oil level? I need to check back to figure out how long ago mine was serviced but the level has not dropped off the maximum since. Even when cold yesterday it was still reading max.

I had a car with something similar a long time back but at least it had a dipstick so you could double check for peace of mind.

I've got a simular dilemma. Got the car just over a month ago and ran it in carefully running up to the recommended max revs over the 1,200 miles. Now done about 1,500 miles but according to the MMI not a drop of oil been used. I find that difficult to believe. Haven't added any oil as worried about over filling but also don't trust what the computer is telling me. Don't understand how you can 'fit' a dipstick though as suggested by Eightfoot?

In three years and 40,000 miles of ownership my Range Rover's electronic dipstick barely moved.

looking in the engine bay under the right hand air filter is a tube with a black bung in it,go to local dealer and buy dipstick for b7 rs4,its a bit of a faff to check as you need to remove the plastic panel (4x quick release clips) ontop of the grill and remove the air scoop for the right air box (2x torks screws) but once you have done it several times it only takes a minute or two to check
i would also recomend using a oil sucker to remone some oil untill the mmi shows less than max as i think they are over filled from new, mine used to smell and burn oil untill i started running it at a lower level now its not using any (took over a ltr out of mine before the mmi started showing a drop)

i picked my car up last week and the dealer said when going through the handover that it was best to check when the engine had warmed up. Not sure if that helps any?

Mine's on 6k miles now as oil level is still the same
On my last B8, it needed half a litre of oil every 1500miles or so, so not sure where the inconsistency lies
The indicator on the last car was hugely inaccurate and would show about half full all the time, and then you'd suddenly get the oil light on and have to top it up

yep thats great if you have the time to warm the car up first, because the mmi won't show a reading untill its up to normal temp and as for doing the check warm i dont see that it makes any difference as i have checked mine after i have pulled up on my drive after a 30mls trip then checked it 3 days later without using it and its been the same, now if it was dry sumped like the r8 then yes thats more important,i think the important thing to remember is check it and not just forget it untill the yellow light comes on

I am at 8600 miles and it's had 2.5 litres based on the MMI readout. Just about to go in for its first service and it shows half full. I'll ask them how much comes out. It needs 9.7 litres for the first service. Audi wanted £160 for the oil.....I bought own for £80.
