I has that on my Misano Red B7.....maybe the critters like red!
I too had it outside rather than garaged and they had a good chew around the engine bay. £600 to get the worst of it repaired only for the little barstewards to come back and have another go. I looked at all kinds of devices from the sonic deterrents (general opinion is that they are next to useless) to a German product that places live pads around the engine bay so the critters get an electric shock when they venture on them. Was designed to deter pine martens from destroying engine bays (seemingly more common than you would think in Germany!) but considered this expensive/excessive. The only real solution is to exterminate the little blighters while keeping the car garaged. Poison is fine but nothing can beat the traditional snap trap baited with peanut butter (forget cheese) and try and remove any food source that they would come back for. I placed a snap trap at each wheel every night and kept on doing that until no more dead bodies in the morning. You also need to get rid of their smell within the engine bay as that attracts them back a good wash down with a decent detergent (Jeyes fluid did it for me) but as always watch the electrics. Another tip I received from an RAC guy was to spray all the rubber with a silicon product as apparently they hate the taste.
If it's any consolotion they also ate the diesel tank on my discovery and electrics on one of my bikes before I got it under control.
The suggestion of a cat isn't a bad one either.
