How long between shipment and delivery?

Post by OL55 » Sat Nov 01, 2014 11:01 am

Hi all,

My car was due to be shipped this last week, how long does the dealer usually hang on to the car until it's ready for collection? I assume it has to go through PDI of some sort? They said it was due to be on one of three ships last week but couldn't give me an exact date until it arrives with them at the dealer. Sorry, very excited and want it now!

Spec is as follows -

Daytona Grey
Sports Pack
Black Styling Pack
V Spokes
Full Black leather supersport seats
Black headlining
Panoramic Roof
Heated Seats
Convenience Pack
Privacy Glass
Advanced Parking
Auto hill hold
B&O

I'm pretty sure that's it from memory, so all the essentials really! My weekend car is a V10 R8, which leaves me in a bit of a dilemma really. As much as I love the R8 it just lacks the rawness that I think I want from a weekend car or perhaps the specialness of something like a Ferrari. So it'll be interesting to see how I get on with the RS4 and whether the R8 becomes seldom used. The R8 is also Daytona, an early manual car and really is stonkingly fast and across country is like nothing else I've driven.

Another thing I've been thinking about is the exhaust on the RS4, I guess I'll live with the standard sports exhaust for a while and then decide what to do. I've yet to hear any in life with aftermarket exhausts so I'm struggling to decide what sounds good. Probably the best is the Akrapovic sound file on their website, however this may just been the quality of the recording. Does it really sound that much better than the Milltek?! Drone is a concern as I do a fair few motorway runs up the A1, so I don't really want to be slowing down or speeding up due to a drone.

Are there any meets coming up soon? Keen to hear some other cars and peoples thoughts on it.

Mine was about three weeks from build to collection. Once it actually went onto the boat it took a day to get to Sheerness, sat at the docks for about 5 days and then onto the dealer (about 30 miles away). Dealer said that he only needed it for a few hours to do the PDI but I was busy that week so couldn't pick it up for a couple of days anyway.

Okay, well mine was supposedly build week commencing 29th Sep, so we're already a month on from there.. So guess it's likely to be next week if I'm lucky or the following.. So 5-6 weeks from build slot. Though I guess the time can add up quickly with a few days hanging around here and there as Snotsicle said.

Any other hints on running in? Though guess dealer will go through this. so fairly conservative revs for the first 1000 miles or so.. Or will it be okay to open it up once warm?!

IIRC, it was BW37 (8th Sep), built/left factory around the 13th, on boat at Emden about the 24th, arrived Sheerness the next day, at the dealer on the 30th, collected on the 3rd October (but could probably have had it on the 1st).

The biggest variable seems to be waiting for a space on a boat that is going to the right port.

My car was already warmed-up (and sweating under its satin cover) when I collected it. The dealer said they do that routinely with deliveries of RS cars, presumably so that the oil is up to temperature in case the owner immediately red-lines their new toy as soon as they are off the forecourt.

Instructions were just to be "sympathetic" with it for the first 1000 miles then gradually open up the gas for the next 500.

I was told nothing about "running in". You'll find if you try to nail it when cold....it won't let you....changes up before any trouble, like to 7000rpm limit in the B7. Get in it and drive it.

with both my b8's, dealer said engine was run in on the bench before going in the car, and to perhaps be a little gentle on the overall car fir first 1000 miles or so incase anything else let' go, but other than that, to drive it normally from day one
Engine does loosen off after first few hundred miles too

I'd heard the same about the engine being run-in before it went anywhere the car - it was longevity of the gearbox that was more of a concern.

Mechanical sympathy, simple as that. Engine run in on bench, but not married to rest of drivetrain until build. So go easy for first thousand.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds easy enough.. I'm looking forward to spend some time with the gearbox, as I wasnt entirely convinced on the short test drive I had. This car is replacing an 8 speed Rangey 4.4 TDV8, which had a brilliant gearbox and yes although the gear changes were lightning quick in today's standards it was so silky smooth and forward thinking in town.

Any idea of any meets before Christmas?

Keep an eye on the trackdays and meets section, as I'm sure we'll have a meet before Xmas at box hill

Gearbox is awesome. Assume the Tata SUV had the ZF box which is also very good.

Good to hear, it was probably more of a case of not being used to driving a non aspirated auto car that needs to be revved. Yes the ZF, mated with that engine is sublime.. oodles of torque and really does shift but feels so unstressed. But I guess that's the whole point of a big diesel V8 with two turbos.
